Manchester United hosted a dull 183rd Manchester derby at Old Trafford in front of an empty gallery. The match ended 0-0 as neither team wanted to take risks at this stage of the league and in the end, they had to settle for a shared point.
Manchester United started the game with a diamond formation and Paul Pogba started at the left side of the diamond and Bruno Fernandes at the number 10 position. They tried to be compact and hit Manchester City on the break but could not create a clear opportunity for themselves.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola set up a team not to concede a goal. With two holding midfielders in front of a back four. They defended pretty well against United’s quick attackers. The Citizens created two big chances but couldn’t capitalise any of those.
Manchester United Player Ratings vs Manchester City:
David De Gea(GK) – 7/10
Didn’t have to do it throughout the game but when he was required he saved brilliantly a one on one against Riyad Mahrez to rescue United.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka(RB) – 7/10
After a horrible midweek, he played well against city rivals, almost repelled every cross, and kept Raheem Sterling quiet apart from once where Sterling bamboozled him.
Victor Lindelöf(CB) – 7/10
Played almost a flawless game defensively and twice his flick went wide, once Scott Mctominey should have scored on the second post.
Harry Maguire(CB) – 8/10
Maguire was very solid in defence blocked two clear on targets from Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne. His head from Luke Shaw’s corner went past just over on the half-hour mark. Defensively he was excellent throughout the 90 minutes.
Luke Shaw(LB) – 7/10
Kept Mahrez quiet apart from once after that Ferran Torres struggled to find spaces against him and blocked crosses coming into the box pretty well.
Fred(CM) – 7/10
He was tidy with the ball and protected back four well enough. After taking a knock at the first half in a clash with De Bruyne, in the end, it was an accomplished display in the middle of the park.
Scott Mctominay(CM) – 7/10
Missed a great opportunity at the far post from a Lindelof flick. He played well in the second half good with the ball and defensively solid as well.
Paul Pogba(CM) – 7/10
Worked hard in the midfield covered his ground well to help Shaw in defence. He played some customary gorgeous long-range passes, looked good and energetic.
Bruno Fernandes(CAM) – 6/10
An unfamiliar quiet night from the Portuguese. His first-half free-kick deflected wide for a corner. In the second half, he looked tired after an exhausting midweek against Leipzig.
Marcus Rashford(CF) – 5/10
Played as a wide forward in diamond, he remained wide from the goal. Couldn’t impact the game, won a penalty but it was disallowed for offside. It was a very quiet night for Rashford.
Mason Greenwood(CF) – 5/10
He was quite in the derby, his one shot was blocked and another one went off target. In the end, he was substituted for Anthony Martial.
Anthony Martial(CF) – 6/10
Came on for ineffective Greenwood and hold up play was very good and played well. But he didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
Manchester City Player Ratings vs Manchester United:
Ederson(GK) – 5/10
Uncharacteristically sloppy with his passing on a couple of occasions in the first half and fortunate not to be punished when he gifted possession to Fernandes deep in City’s half. Rarely tested otherwise.
Kyle Walker(RB) – 6/10
Saved by a VAR offside check after he clumsily brought down Rashford for a United penalty early in the second half. Didn’t have much to do other than that but offered almost nothing going forward.
Ruben Dias(CB) – 6/10
Pretty comfortable evening, just had to block one shot from Greenwood beside that nothing significant required to do.
John Stones(CB) – 6/10
A third consecutive Premier League start for Stones, who has finally worked his way back into Pep Guardiola’s team. He played well, good and clean with the ball and defensively he didn’t make any mistake.
Joao Cancelo(LB) – 7/10
A solid display from City’s right-footed left-back. Minimise the threat of Rashford and Greenwood. Going forward he looked lively and put Wan-Bissaka in trouble a few times.
Rodri(CM) – 6/10
Few missed place passes but dealt with Bruno Fernandes well and gave no space to him in the middle of the park, overall satisfactory performance.
Fernandinho(CM) – 6/10
His first Premier League start since the Leicester City defeat. Like his midfield partner, his passing lacked directions but helped to keep quiet Fernandes. Picked up a late booking.
Kevin De Bruyne(CAM) – 6/10
An ineffective night in terms of his standard. He was frustrated with the lack of quality passing from back to front. He could not involve in the game remained very quiet.
Riyad Mahrez(RW) – 5/10
An awful night for Mahrez, could not get pass Luke Shaw and missed a glorious opportunity to give his team a lead in the first half.
Raheem Sterling(LW) – 5/10
Another Manchester derby and once again Sterling could not figure out how he can get pass Wan-Bissaka. Once he out-thought Wan-Bissaka but blocked off by Maguire. His goal drought against the Red Devils continues.
Gabriel Jesus(CF) – 5/10
Had a great opportunity to open the deadlock in the first half but he could not keep it on target. Overall a very quiet night for him against a solid United backline.
Ferran Torres(RW) – 6/10
Came on for Mahrez but could not manage to get pass Shaw and remained very quiet.
Man of the match:
Manchester United defender and captain Harry Maguire is our man of the match, his two outstanding blocks from Sterling and De Bruyne was outstanding, and covered his defensive partners very well.
