Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City: Post-match Analysis

Manchester City easily went pass the challenge of Manchester United at Old Trafford by 2-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final. This win means we will be able to watch the battle between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho in the final.

Two goals from two unlikely goal scorer John Stones and Fernandinho in the second half took Manchester City through to the fourth successive Carabao Cup final and they won previous three occasions.

Manchester United tried to contain the threat of Manchester City and did relatively well in the first half but it was too much to handle for them in the second half. Bruno Fernandes had a very flustered game in terms of the final ball.

With this defeat, Manchester United’s 11 games unbeaten streak in the domestic competition snapped and Manchester City continue their 12 matches unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Manchester United’s Norwegian manager Ole Gunner Solskjær made only one change from their last home victory against Aston Villa. He chose to go with diamond 4-3-1-2 formation.

Dean Henderson started in this match who has started previously all Carabao Cup matches this season and David De Gea was rested for this encounter. Paul Pogba now started three consecutive matches.

Pep Guardiola made two changes in Manchester City Xl from their great win at Stamford Bridge. 

Riyad Mahrez and Fernandinho started in place of Bernardo Silva and Rodrigo Hernandez. City now opted to go without a centre forward in two successive matches.

Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City match analysis::

The game started very end to end as and both sides tried to press each other higher up the pitch.

In the early part of the game, either side had a goal disallowed and both the talisman of each team had a shot on goal but Bruno Fernandes’ shot was brilliantly saved by City keeper and Kevin De Bruyne’s shot came off the post.

City controlled the ball but Manchester United defended well that’s why Henderson didn’t have to do much and they didn’t have a single on target in the first half. Phil Foden scored for City but again it was disallowed for offside.

Manchester United tried to hurt City in transition but good defensive display from John Stones and Ruben Dias dealt that pretty well.

Manchester City started the second half brilliantly and got the goal early from a great set-piece delivery from Foden and finished by Stones.

Followed by a goal Mahrez took a super shot from just outside the box but Dean Henderson saved it excellently.

Manchester United tried to come back into the game but great defending from City denied them every time.

At the end on the 83rd-minute mark, a superb volley from Fernandinho booked the ticket of the Carabao cup final for forth conservative times for the Cityzens. 

Notable Performances:

Ruben Dias(CB) – (8.5/10)(Manchester City): Played an excellent match in this big Cup semi-final defended the goal like a rock in the back.

John Stones(8.5/10) – (8.5/10)(Manchester City): scored the opening goal in the second half and overall defended very good as well. He is looking rejuvenated this season.

Anthony Martial(CF) – (4/10)(Manchester United): Tried to hold up the ball in the first half but in the second half he was completely anonymous and looked lethargic as well.

Manchester United will play against Watford in F.A Cup in their next match on 9th January and their next Premier League match is away to Burnley on 12th January.

Manchester City’s next game is against Birmingham City on Sunday in F.A Cup and next Premier League game is against Brighton & Hove Albion on 13th January.
