Manchester United 6-2 Leeds United: Post-Match Analysis

Manchester United thrashed their old rival Leeds United at Old Trafford by 6-2 in Roses rivalry. After 16 years Manchester United and Leeds United met in Premier League and this match didn’t disappoint the football fans. It was Man United’s biggest win in the league since the 8-2 victory over Arsenal.

Scott McTominey becomes the first player in Premier League history to score 2 goals in the opening 3 minutes of a match, who scored twice and assisted another one for Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes also scored 2 goals in this match. Another goal was scored by Victor Lindelöf.

Dean Henderson and Paul Pogba were dropped for this game but that didn’t cause any problems for United in this match. With this victory, Manchester United are now third and ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, 26 points from 13 matches with one game in hand and 5 points behind Liverpool.

This huge defeat for Leeds mean they’ve now conceded 30 goals which is the highest by any other team in this division. They are 14th with 17 points in 14 games.

Manchester United manager made 5 changes from their Thursday night match against Sheffield United. Ole Gunner Solskjær opted to go with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation in this game. The surprising name to the starting Xl was Daniel James.

Paul Pogba started on the bench was a surprising decision after his great performance in midweek. Dean Henderson was replaced by David De Gea and Scott McTominey and Fred started in central midfield. Luke Shaw started as well in place of Alex Telles.

On the other hand, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa didn’t make any changes from the big win against Newcastle United and went with his usual 4-1-4-1 formation. Patrick Bamford the highest goal-getter of leads start the line for Leeds.

Match Analysis Manchester United 6-2 Leeds:

Manchester United started the game like 100 miles an hour, they scored just on the 68th-second mark, a great long-range strike from 24-year-old Scotsman Scott McTominey.

Before The Red Devils fans can finish their celebration for the first goal at home McTominey made it 2-0. A great run from the deep and a sweet reverse pass from Anthony Martial and an even better finish off his left foot from McTominey.

Patrick Bamford put the ball in the net for Leeds on 19 minutes but replays showed he was well offside and the goal was disallowed.

Fernandes added to the goal tally on the 20th minute, United caught Leeds on the break. The ball was delivered to Martial in the area which Leeds couldn’t clear properly and Fernandes hits it into the net from 10 yards out.

Lindelof added to Leeds woes when he scored from a close-range shot on 37 minutes. Luke Shaw’s corner was flicked by Martial in the near post and Lindelöf directed it into the goal.

Leeds captain Liam Cooper scored a consolation goal before the first half from a corner. Leeds were caught on the counter-attack yet again on 66 minutes with McTominay threading a pass-through to James who hit the ball through Illan Meslier’s legs.

Pascal Struijk conceded a penalty four minutes later which Fernandes struck easily into Meslier’s goal. Stuart Dallas scored Leeds’ second with a curling great shot from the edge of the box on 73 minutes.

It was almost like a tennis match, the ball was moving from one side to another every time. They combinedly made 43 attempts and 17 of them were on target.

After the match, Solskjær said,

“Just imagine if there were 75,000 people in, it would have gone down in history as one of the great performances against Leeds,”

“We had to earn the right by running as much as them, that’s a challenge. It could have been 12-4! It was that kind of game.

Scott McTominey(Manchester United) – (9/10): One of the best performances in Manchester United shirt, ran the midfield made excellent runs from the deep and scored two great goals.

Bruno Fernandes(Manchester United) – (8/10): Scored two goals and assisted for the first goal. Few great flicks in the midfield to open up spaces for the runners overall a great performance.

Jack Harrison(Leeds United) – (4/10): On loan from Manchester City made very little impact in this game and Completely anonymous throughout the match.

Manchester United will play against Everton at Goodison Park in the League Cup quarter-final on Wednesday. Their next match in the league will be a big match against Leicester City at King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Leeds United’s next match will be against Burnley at home in Elland Road. They will get much needed off in midweek in this busy festive fixtures.
