Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes set new records


A dramatic comeback from Manchester United thanks to Edinson Cavani’s late goal at St. Mary’s Stadium creates a couple of significant histories for The Red Devils’ honour book. Bruno Fernandes scored the first goal for Manchester United and creates another record for himself.

Although a very good start from United in the first quarter of the first half, they trailed by two quickfire goals by Jan Bednarek and a glorious freekick from the Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse at the break.

But in the second half Manager, Ole Gunner Solskjær brought Edinson Cavani in place of Mason Greenwood and it changed the course of the match. Two goals and an assist from Cavani for the Bruno Fernandes goal earned them the important 3 points and took them to 8th place.

United now have 16 points in the opening 9 league matches, just 5 points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur with an extra game at hand.

The Red Devils have set a new club record for away wins, after the win against Southampton. The 20-time English champions have now won eight successive top-flight away matches for the first time in their history, having also overcome Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Everton on the road this term.

The last time they dropped a point away in the league against Tottenham Hotspur, in the first match after the restart of last season.

Manchester United creates another record on Sunday afternoon. They became the first side in Premier League history to triumph in four successive away matches despite trailing in each when they beat Southampton.

The Old Trafford outfit is showing the spirit of the old ‘Fergie Time’ under Solskjær by overcoming opponents after trailing and scoring late goals.

Bruno Fernandes the talisman of Manchester United creates a record after scoring the first goal of the comeback. He became just the fourth Manchester United player to register on the scoresheet in five successive away matches in the Premier League when he found the back of the net against Southampton on Sunday.

The Portugal international has been a revelation for the Red Devils since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January, scoring 22 times and registering 13 assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.

The 26-year-old made it 10 goals in 14 outings during the 2020-21 campaign when he scored against the Saints. Fernandes has now netted seven times in nine Premier League outings during the 2020-21 campaign.

Fernandes equalled a goalscoring record at St Mary’s as he became just the fourth United player after Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score in five consecutive away Premier League games.

What next for United?

This comeback win will give Solskjær’s side much-needed confidence before the crucial Champions League match against PSG on Wednesday. They need a draw from this match to qualify for the knockout stage.

After this victory, they are only 5 points away from the top spot with one match in hand. It will be interesting to see if they can show some consistency to build on this triumph or they will struggle yet again after a few results on the bounce.
