Denis Zakaria at the heart of the battle between the Manchester clubs

Manchester United and Manchester City battle it out in the transfer window for signing the Swiss Defensive Midfielder Denis Zakaria. Both Premier League giants have shown their interest in the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.

The 24-year-old Zakaria has impressed his suitors by being highly consistent in the big stages. Last season he put in an incredible shift which led to Monchengladbach qualifying for the Champions League.

Manchester United and Manchester City both have ageing Defensive Midfielders, Matic and Fernandinho. This ageing problem has the English Giants at the doorsteps of ‘Die Fohlen’.

The highly reliable Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast that Manchester City are focusing on Denis Zakaria.

“He is so appreciated by the board, they are following him, they are in contact with his agent. So he’s for sure on the list of Manchester City.

There is nothing advanced yet because they are not negotiating yet with Borussia Monchengladbach, they need time.”

– Fabrizio Romano on ‘Here We Go’ podcast

Zakaria started 22 games for Monchengladbach in the 19/20 Bundesliga season. He attempted 2.1 tackles per 90 minutes and won 1.3 tackles. These are very impressive numbers coming from a young defensive midfielder.

The Swiss International also won 6 duels out of the attempted 10 duels per 90 minutes in the 19/20 season.

Manchester City will definitely be going out for the midfielder. The Sky Blues are known for their presence in the transfer market. And a player of Zakaria’s calibre won’t be let go by them. And after confirmation from Don Fabrizio, Pep will definitely go for his man.

Summer signing Rodri has not lived up to his expectations yet. As a result of which he might be replaced by a new signing next transfer window.

Nemanja Matic is on his way to retirement. This would lead Manchester United to be without an experienced defensive midfielder. However, academy graduate James Garner is definitely looking for a spot in the starting XI after a stint at Watford.

Signing Zakaria would also mean Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes would get to play together. Unlocking Paul Pogba version 3.0 at Old Trafford

This dream alone would lead Ed Woodward and co. to run after Zakaria.
