Manchester United scrape together their first Premier League home win of the season with a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. This victory arrives after dropping points against Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
This win came as a result of a retaken Bruno Fernandes penalty in the 56th minute. The penalty was given due to a handball incident inside the box when Mata crossed the ball from the left directly to Furlong’s hand.
Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone saved the initial effort by the Portuguese Magnifico. However, a VAR check ruled it out on accounts of Johnstone being out of his line and the spot-kick was retaken.
This scrappy win might have brought the Manchester United’s Norwegian boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer some time.
Manchester United vs West Brom Match Report:
Ole’s tricky Red Devils lined up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation with the unanswered absence of superstars Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood.
He [Pogba] tried to finish the last session but it [the ankle] got worse and worse so he is unavailable today,”
“Hopefully he is okay for Tuesday [against Istanbul Basaksehir] but we’ll see.”– Solskjaer on Paul Pogba
Traveling side manager Slaven Bilic’s West Brom lined up in a pragmatic 4-5-1 low-block formation.
Manchester United who always struggled against a low-block did quite well. However, they could only get 1 goal due to the World Class performance by the West Brom number one Johnstone. The Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper saved 6 shots and proved his quality on Saturday.
West Brom were knocking on Manchester United’s doors as well but couldn’t convert due to the crossbar and David De Gea. The Spaniard is now slowly but surely finding his old form.
The Baggies were close to getting a penalty in the 1st minute of the 2nd half after Gallagher was tripped by Bruno. Referee David Coote pointed to the spot immediately but then VAR overruled the decision.
Martial failed to find the net again this week continuing his poor form this season and now failed to score in 5 Premier League matches.
The win over West Brom might be unconvincing but it boosts The Red Devils to the top half of the league table above both Arsenal and Manchester City.
Manchester United now sits at 9th position with 13 points in 8 games and a game in hand. And the Baggies now struggling in the relegation zone with a mere 3 points and still without a win after 9 games.
In an interview with MUTV Solskjaer reacted to the game.
“Well it’s important to get the first win at home. I think a lot has been said and written about it and I think you could see towards the end we were a bit edgy that we needed to hang on to this win. We could have, probably should have, scored a couple more goals to make it an easier finish. At 1-0 you’re never sure and it’s a tight call both ways.”– Solskjaer to MUTV after 1-0 win over West Brom.
