Manchester United has been actively linked with a transfer for the Dutch international, Frenkie De Jong. However, the deal has stalled over the last few weeks as the club could not agree on a price for the player.
Chelsea is also reportedly interested in signing the Dutch midfielder from Barcelona. The Blues are looking to strengthen their midfield with frequent injury concerns for N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. Chelsea is left with Mateo Kovacic as the only clear choice for midfield.
The future is still uncertain for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher as Thomas Tuchel is keen to consider pre-season before making a final decision. Therefore, the addition of a midfielder to the squad is necessary for Chelsea.
On the other hand, Manchester United is in desperate need to land a midfielder like De Jong. Fred and Scott McTominay have failed to provide the robustness the Red Devils expected from the duo. Erik Ten Hag is keen to strengthen the midfield options at Manchester United before the start of the season.
Frenkie De Jong wants to reunite with Erik Ten Hag
Barcelona is looking to offload the Dutch international due to financial pressure. Although, the President, Joan Laporta has said that Barcelona does not wish to sell the player. However, eminent journalists have repeatedly reported that Manchester United are confident of signing De Jong.
The player is keen to reunite with his former boss Erik Ten Hag over Chelsea. Frenkie De Jong is looking to stay in Barcelona, however, if the player has to move then he prefers Old Trafford over Stamford Bridge. Erik Ten Hag and De Jong share a good working relationship. The pair was very successful at Ajax and will look to recreate similar magic at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
The signing will be crucial for Manchester United as it will afford much-needed quality in the midfield. Manchester United are preparing an offer of around £56.2 million which would increase with add-ons. Barcelona will be tempted by this offer, however, whether they will sanction the sale is yet to be seen.
Chelsea on other hand will have to be proactive in the transfer market to sign alternate targets for midfield. With De Jong seemingly out of their reach, the Blues will have to swiftly move to other players in the middle of the park.
