The last time when Manchester United met Istanbul Basaksehir, they left the field humiliated with a 2-1 loss, defeated by a team formed just seven years ago.
In the event, a black mark appeared for the Red Army in European football history books. This time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the team came to settle the score, and oh boy! Istanbul Basaksehir paid the price!
Manchester United: Donny Van De Beek is given a pivot mid role along with Fred in the absence of Paul Pogba. Pogba was expected by Solskjaer to be fit and available for the Champions League clash after getting a knock past weekend.
Edison Cavani made his first start up front. Alex Telles replaced Luke Shaw who is suffering from a hamstring injury.
Istanbul Basaksehir: Former Tottenham man Nacer Chadli returned from injury. Junior Caicara and Enzo Crivelli still remain unavailable.
Man Utd XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka (Williams 60), Maguire, Lindelof (Tuanzebe 46), Telles, Fred, Van de Beek, Fernandes (Greenwood 60), Rashford (James 60), Cavani, Martial (Matic 82)
Istanbul XI: Gunok, Rafael, Skrtel (Ponck 87), Epureanu, Bolingoli-Mbombo (Ali Kaldirim 74), Ozcan (De Paula 74), Kahveci (Tekdemir 46), Chadli (Gulbrandsen 61), Turuc, Visca, Ba
Manchester United were running riot against Istanbul Basaksehir last night. Bruno Fernandes managed to hit the half-volley from the edge of the area laid across from a deflected Alex Telles corner to open the scoring for the side with only seven minutes in the clock.
Donny van de Beek in an extraordinary performance was controlling the game in midfield. Involving him in the start saw United fierce in attack and the wave kept on thrashing the opponent’s defence.
The second goal arose from Gunok’s mistake as he dropped the ball in Bruno’s path who strike it behind the goal post. Marcus Rashford with the spot-kick put the game to end with a three-goal lead.
Istanbul was suffering throughout the game but managed to find a consolation goal after David de Gea failed to keep Deniz Turuc’s free-kick out.
Daniel James was subbed later on in the second half of the game, whose nudge on the ball with Mason Greenwood’s pass sent the tally to 4-1.
PLAYER RATINGS OF NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Bruno Fernandes (9/10) – He has been the catalyst for Manchester United performances. Adding two goals to the tally with his striking excellence and vision.
Marcus Rashford (8/10) – Proved to be a nuisance to the enemy’s defence once again. Istanbul left-wing back felt the breach, he completed three dribbles, created one chance, won a penalty, and scored it.
Donny van de Beek (7/10) – Performed excellent to be precise. Deployed in midfield pivot with Fred, created two chances, and was the soul to attacking.
Manchester United sits at top of Group H in the Champions League table while Istanbul Basaksehir is at last. A point in the next match against Paris Saint-Germain would seal the deal for Manchester United.
