Keane and Solskjaer impressed with Edinson Cavani show at Saints

Edinson Cavani, the 33-year-old Uruguayan Center Forward, might have broken the curse that followed revered Number 7. Manchester United signed Edinson Cavani on a free transfer on deadline day of the summer transfer window and what a signing he has been till now for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Southampton hosted Manchester United at home in Gameweek 10 of the English Premier League. The Red Devils were on a splendid 7 consecutive away win streak coming into this game. After a very good start, Mason Greenwood missed a scoring opportunity after he hit the side of the net from a tough angle. Southampton‘s Jan Bednarek scored a stunning header shortly after that.

Manchester United then went on to miss yet another opportunity after Alex McCarthy pulled a triple save denying Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes. Then James Ward-Prowse scored a sensational free-kick to make it 2-0 for the home side.

Manchester United were very wasteful for the first 45 minutes of the game.

Manchester United boss and ex-super sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his very own Super Sub in Edinson Cavani.

The beginning of the second half saw the introduction of Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan replaced Mason Greenwood. This decision was purely tactical as Solskjaer explained in the post-match presser. Cavani did have some trouble changing his boots. Which prompted Roy Keane to take a hit at the Uruguayan.

“He was obviously slow getting onto the pitch with those boots.”

– Roy Keane said after Edinson Cavani struggled to put on his boots.

Appropriately named ‘El Matador’ for his composure in front of goal, he came on and instantly changed the game by scoring a brace and assisting.

The right side of the pitch was finally being utilized as Cavani hugged the sidelines creating space in the middle for the midfielders to occupy. This drew out the defenders to the wings and Bruno could act as a false-nine while getting into the box.

After a very clever one-two with Aaron Wan Bissaka and Fred, Cavani whipped the ball into Bruno Fernandes’s feet assisting the first goal in the comeback.

The second goal came shortly after in the 74th minute after Edinson Cavani headed in a deflected Bruno Fernandes shot. The Red Devils now had a comeback on the books. Edinson Cavani yet again confused the defenders with his World-Class off the ball movement.

Manchester United became the first team in the Premier League to win 4 consecutive away games after trailing in each. This was thanks to yet another header by Edinson Cavani.

Edinson Cavani now has 3 goals and 1 assist in 5 Premier League games. He has not started a game for Manchester United in the Premier League yet.

Ex-Manchester United captain and midfielder Roy Keane was all praises for Edinson Cavani after he spearheaded a comeback for The Red Devils.

“It was always a gamble when he (Edinson Cavani) came to the club. People were doubting why he came to the club, did he have the hunger and desire?

We’ve seen clips of him in some other games and we thought, ‘Has he still got it?’, but we’ve seen proof of it today, he could turn out to be a huge signing for United. It’s worked out well today.”

– Roy Keane said after the match

The Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t far behind praising the Uruguayan either.

“He reminds me of Andy [Cole] with his movement inside the box: so clever, so sharp. He’s seen that cross before, he knows what moment to move. And his best friend in the box – as Sir Alex [Ferguson] always used to tell me – is space”

– Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
