Manchester United Out of the Race for Upamecano after Champions League exit

Manchester Upamecano, Football Express

Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Dayot Upamecano since the last summer and they are scouting him for quite a while now.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunner Solskjær has been an admirer of Upamecano and wanted the French International in his squad last summer, but Ed Woodward, the chief executive of Manchester United was unable to fulfill the desire of Solskjaer.

United have conceded 17 goals in just 10 games and was successful in securing 7th in the Premier League. Solskjaer’s side was also embarrassed by their form with Tottenham Hotspurs 1-6 at home. They haven’t shown any certainty that they will finish top four at least.

Manchester United‘s defensive issue is not a new problem, they signed the English professional Harry Maguire for a world-record fee but he hasn’t been of enough utility so far, the other centre-backs they have are not world-class lacking potential, so they are continuing to struggle to keep up clean sheets.

Solskjaer wanted Upamecano to complement Maguire with his pace. The United legend wants his team to play higher up the field but the lack of pace in his first-choice centre-backs likes of Maguire and Victor Lindelof forcing them to play deep to sustain their Premier league profile.

Manchester United to miss out on Upamecano?

Manchester United could have bought Upamecano last summer where he had only one year left in his contract. They would have got him for cheap but they didn’t show any interest in him even though they badly required a quick and world-class defender. In the end, he signed a contract extension until 2023 and remained at RB Leipzig.

Having joined Leipzig in January 2017 from Red Bulls Salzburg, Upamecano has gone on pace to become one of the key players for Julian Nagelsmann and caught the eye of European fans.

After the exit of the Red Devils from the Champions League, it is unlikely that the 21-year-old defender will choose Old Trafford as his next destination option in the upcoming January transfer window. While other European big boys are also in the race for him like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid to feature for the Champions League Football.

The Leipzig defender has a release clause of £38 million which can be triggered in the summer of 2021. Manchester United is trying hard to prompt that release clause and land him for the next summer.

But according to some reports, Liverpool is trying to sign him in January after the long term casualties of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, the first team defenders landing on the ground, and they are in a dialogue to sign him in January to fill the void of Van Dijk.

If Manchester United are unable to sign Upamecano, they might go for other alternatives like Ben White of Brighton & Hove Albion or Pau Torres of Villarreal.

It will be an interesting transfer window to find out which team can sign Upamecano, either the United’s can get the service or they have to look for alternative options.
