Manchester United‘s board still have their eyes on Nikola Milenkovic. The Fiorentina defender has been on the clubs list for months. The club is looking to sign a defender this transfer window and Milenkovic might just be the guy. They have many defenders in the radar but considering that the Serbian has been linked for a long time, we cannot rule it out so quickly.
The youngster has had a strong season with Fiorentina this season. He made 37 appearances in all, 34 coming in the Serie A. Along with his solid work at defence, he contributed 3 goals. He has been at the club since 2017 and has a contract that runs until next season.
Fiorentina do not plan to extend his contract nor would they want to sell him for free. Most clubs across Europe are currently struggling with finances and value each penny. Manchester United are on the lookout for a defender who can partner Harry Maguire and could get a good signing in Milenkovic.
Defensive troubles at Old Trafford
Manchester United had a great season except for the fact that there was no silverware. They finished second in the league, reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. They were grouped alongside PSG and RB Leipzig in the Champions League and crashed out in the group stages. Good performances assured them a place in the Europa League where they beat the likes of AC Milan, Roma, Real Sociedad and Granada to reach the finals.
In the finals, they lost to Villarreal on penalties. Much like the entire season, a simple defensive error gave Villarreal the goal they needed. On the opponents line-up was Pau Torres. Torres is another player in United’s radar. Villareal have given the green signal to buy Torres and many clubs are after him.
Manchester United not alone for Milenkovic
Reports claim that AC Milan, Inter Milan and West Ham are keeping tabs on the developments. Ambitions to perform well at their respective European competitions will be an important factor.
Milenkovic has been linked to North London as well with Tottenham Hotspur as well as Arsenal looking to land him. Fiorentina will not want to let the player go for free and will seek to negotiate a well- structured deal.
