Manchester United’s defensive frailties is not a recent problem. They have been looking to strengthen their defence for quite some time now. They bought Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £80 million and made him the most expensive defender of all time. Aaron Wan-Bissaka also arrived last season for another hefty fee.
But United defensive problems are still there, 16 goals already conceded in 9 league fixtures. They also capitulated 6 goals against Tottenham Hotspur at home in an embarrassing 1-6 defeat.
Despite a recent upturn in results, Manchester United’s defence instability has been a cause for concern for some time.
They have tried a few defensive pairing alongside Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf the most preferable option for Ole Gunner Solskjær, and also Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly. None of them looked convincing and therefore they are looking to bring someone who can complement Maguire.
Swap deal for Pau Torres?
In last summer’s transfer window Manchester United were linked with Dayot Upamecano and Pau Torres but nothing materialized at the end. But, United is tracking the progress of Pau Torres for some time now.
Manchester United could use Eric Bailly to land defensive target Pau Torres from Villarreal, according to one report.
Manchester United is prioritising a new centre-back for 2021, while Villarreal’s 23-year-old Torres is known to be high up on the club’s wish list.
However, Torres has a contract that runs until 2024, and has release clause reportedly sits at around £60 million, making him a good option for United or any other club.
In order to reduce his price, United could use injury-prone Eric Bailly to help lower the price of the Spain international.
26-year-old Bailly, who has made 89 appearances for the Red Devils, joined United from Villarreal back in 2016 for around £30 million but has struggled with fitness issues and form in recent years. The defender spent 18 months at La Ceramica before his big-money move to England.
Bailly has made just four appearances in all competitions for United this season and is seemingly behind Axel Tuanzebe in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pecking order for now.
Manchester United could use Marcus Rojo or Timothy Fosu- Mensah for this deal whose contracts are running towards the end after the end of the season. They might also try Phil Jones to include who has spent most of his career sidelined due to his injury problems.
There’s has been linked with a host of top European clubs. Torres has developed from the youth ranks at the Yellow Submarine and became a first-team regular last season after an initial breakthrough loan at Malaga in the Spanish second tier in 2018/19. He also has seven senior Spain caps to date.
Can Manchester United land Torres?
It looks clear that Manchester United will go for a defender in the next upcoming transfer windows and it will be fascinating to see which defender they will choose.
They haven’t been clinical in the transfer market so far, they tend to lose out their target when there is competition for Haaland and Bellingham in recent times.
Will they be able to make a watertight defence by signing Torres and can they reach the level with him where they were under Sir Alex Ferguson? Time will tell the answer for everyone.
