Despite their domestic struggles, Manchester United’s transfer news journey in the Europa League has highlighted the progress they’re making under Ruben Amorim. This comes even though the former Sporting Lisbon boss barely has his feet under the table at Old Trafford, with the summer transfer window giving the Portuguese manager a chance to finally conduct a thorough and much-needed squad overhaul.
Manchester United might have made their first Europa League final since the penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal in 2021, but the Red Devils are also on track to record their worst season in the Premier League era. The level this European behemoth has sunk to is quite remarkable, making a summer of shrewd business a necessity. For fans who pick Fantasy Premier League squads and assess any betting tips from FIRST.com, the Red Devils’ squad of players is hard to put any faith in.
Champions League qualification will shape summer plans
If Amorim is to stand any chance of restoring the glory days to the club, impactful signings are needed. With a potential Europa League triumph sealing Champions League qualification, Manchester United would be able to attract a higher calibre of player. Fail to see off Spurs in the final at the San Mames Stadium, though, and United’s summer business will look entirely different.
As such, the pressure is on for Amorim’s troops on 21 May, while the club’s hierarchy will also be hoping for a season-saving win. Regardless of the outcome against Spurs, there is a distinct need for some fresh blood. Already, a number of targets are emerging, including Wolves forward Matheus Cunha. The former Atletico Madrid man isn’t United’s only option, though.
Viktor Gyokeres links won’t go away
Thanks to Ruben Amorim’s input, Viktor Gyokeres is one of football’s most lethal marksmen. With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee having just seven Premier League goals between them, snapping up the former Coventry City striker makes a lot of sense. The Swedish goal machine has netted 52 times in all competitions for Sporting, and while he won’t come cheap given his £85million buy-out clause, he could be a game-changing addition.
Liam Delap is another option
With Ipswich heading back to the Championship, a summer exit for Liam Delap looks inevitable. Delap has taken to life in the top flight like a duck to water, scoring 12 Premier League goals for the Tractor Boys. The former Manchester City player is a cheaper option compared to the aforementioned Gyokeres and he would surely jump at the chance to join Manchester United.
Ronald Araujo is still on United’s radar
Due to the emergence of Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo has found his minutes limited at Barcelona. A defender Manchester United have been tracking for a while, he could certainly ease United’s defensive struggles. The Red Devils have been leaking goals all season, making a centre-back a priority signing.
Victor Osimhen would be a statement signing
Victor Osimhen is a goal-getter who has reportedly been on the club’s radar since 2023. Given the fallout at Napoli and the 33 goals he’s scored in all competitions while on-loan at Galatasaray, the Nigerian star is available, with a reported £40m fee being enough to secure his services. Osimhen’s wages might be a stumbling block, though. Still, if Manchester United want to compete with Europe’s elite once again, then a statement signing in the shape of Victor Osimhen would help.
United are reportedly assessing Jonathan Tah
Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah is available for a free this summer. Competition for his signature is fierce, but clubs like Barcelona could eventually be out of the running given their well-documented financial struggles. If so, the lure of Premier League football with Manchester United could be hard for the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back to turn down.
