Manchester United have been very busy in this transfer market. At the end of 2023/24 season it was expected that the Red Devils may take some crucial decisions. The club finished on 8th position in Premier League with negative goal difference. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying very hard to not repeat it and challenge for the title in the 2024/25 season. Along with players he has changed the United staff and board.
Changes in staff and board
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made some crucial changes in the United board. Dan Ashworth has been signed by Red Devils from Newcastle United. Ashworth’s wait was very long due to long ongoing negotiations between the two clubs. He has finally joined United and given the role of sporting director. Dan Ashworth has already began his job and is very busy in completing the deal of Matthijs De Ligt. Jason Wilcox has also been signed and assigned the role of technical director. Wilcox will report to Ashworth who will report to Omar Berrada. Omar Berrada is United’s new chief executive.
United have parted ways with Benni McCarty and Richard Hartis. Ruud Van Nistelrooy who is the club legend has joined United as Erik Ten Hag’s assistant. Rene Hake has also joined the club and Jelle Ten Rouwelaar is now set to become new goalkeeping coach.
Joao Neves transfer saga
Manchester United are looking for a holding midfielder in this transfer market. The club has been linked with Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain and Joao Neves of Benfica. Casemiro’s future at Old Trafford looks uncertain. Christian Eriksen is also very likely to get sold and there is no decision made yet about offering Sofyan Amrabat a permanent contract.
Manchester United made a bid of €60 million for Joao Neves. However Benfica have no intention of selling Neves. As a result they rejected the bid. Benfica’s president Rui Costa has revealed that the only way to sign Neves is by triggering his €120 million release clause. In addition, United have a heavy competition from PSG.
PSG have now submitted a superior bid than united of €70 million. TEAMtalk reported that at this stage PSG are favourites to sign Neves. However, if Neves joins PSG, they will need to sell Manuel Ugarte. United could take benefit of this situation and sign the Uruguay international to strengthen their midfield.
Manchester United’s other transfer activities
Manchester United need to think about balancing their financial books too. They need to maintain a proper balance between profit and expenditure. The best way to do it is by selling some homegrown players. United have decided to sell Mason Greenwood as his sale will be registered as pure profit. Marseille are interested in Greenwood and are willing to pay around £27 million. The Red Devils have also announced the departure of Donny van de Beek. In addition, Victor Lindelof is also linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
Joshua Zirkzee has already joined United. It is expected that his international teammate Matthijs De Ligt will join very soon. De Ligt only wants Man United and his agent is not in contact with any other club. In addition, United have extended contract of Jonny Evans. The club thinks that he can provide stability to the squad along with leadership and experience. Evans said that it is a privilege to play for this great club and feel support from the incredible fans. Lastly, United are looking for a young left back due injury concerns of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez is the name linked with a move to Old Trafford, but a lot depends on Real Madrid as they have a buy back option in his current contract.
