Marcos Alonso is delighted to join a club where his father was a success

Marcos Alonso has completed his transfer to Barcelona this summer on deadline day. The Spanish full-back has been linked with the club all summer. However, a transfer could not materialize until the deadline day. Chelsea has signed Marc Cucurella this summer from Brighton as cover for Ben Chilwell and were willing to part ways with Marcos Alonso.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a successful 6-year spell with Chelsea after signing from Fiorentina. Marcos Alonso won the Premier League in his very first season. He also won the FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup in his stint in England.

However, the Spanish international wanted a new challenge this summer and Chelsea also wanted a better backup than Marcos Alonso. The aging full-back was unable to cope up with the intensity of the Premier League last season. After the injury to Ben Chilwell, Chelsea gradually started performing inconsistently and lost momentum in the title race.

Father’s history with Barcelona persuaded Marcos Alonso

The Spanish full-back has given his first interview and said that:

Now I am here at last. I’m very happy and looking forward to starting. The only team that was ever in my head was Barça. This is the next stage of my career and I can’t wait. I have had some words with the coach. I want to do what he wants of me and what the team needs. I have experience and I want to offer that to the team.”

Marcos Alonso is excited to join the club as his conversations with Xavi Hernandez have given him clarity about his role in the squad. Clarity regarding the role is very important for any new player to try and settle in quickly. The Spaniard further said that the relationship with his father made a difference. The full-back said that:

“This is it. It is very special to play for the team where my father was such a success. That’s another important reason to be here. I remember when he brought me to see games at Camp Nou, so to be here now is incredible.”

The Spanish international just wanted to sign for Barcelona after leaving Chelsea due to this connection. Marcos Alonso has now become a part of the group of players that has played for both, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Hopefully, the Spanish fullback will be able to succeed at Camp Nou!!
