Mason Greenwood who once was considered as Manchester United’s future seems very close to leave Old Trafford on permanent basis. Greenwood recently had meeting with Manchester United board to discuss about his future. The club wants to sell him as the 22 year old is not in their plans for future. United are listening to offers from various clubs and one of them has impressed the Red Devils. Olympique De Marseille have been interested in Greenwood from a long time. The French side nows seems to closing in on the English winger.
A large group of United players arrived at Carrington on Monday. The club has started the preparations for the pre-season games in United States. Manchester United will be looking to bounce back hard in Premier League in 2024/25 season. Erik Ten Hag has just signed a contract extension with the club. The Dutchman looks confident of winning more silverware next season. Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox are constantly working in on improving the squad. Mason Greenwood who has not played for United since January 2022 was also present at the training complex.
Why was Greenwood present at Carrington
Mason Greenwood was present on Monday with United squad. However Greenwood was not part of the training. Moreover, he didn’t even spend time with any of the squad members. It was revealed that the 22 year old winger was present at Carrington to discuss about his future. Greenwood attended a short meeting with United’s executives. Previously, The Times revealed that Greenwood is frustrated with the lack of clarity he has been receiving from United.
On Monday it was revealed to Greenwood by newly appointed sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox that he is not part of United’s plans. In addition, Greenwood was told that there’s no way back for him at Old Trafford. Many clubs have been interested in Greenwood, but Marseille seems to be leading the race and now are reported very close to sign him.
Mason Greenwood last appeared for Manchester United in January 2022. Till that time the youngster had already scored 35 goals along with providing 10 assists for the club. However, Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 under the suspicion of rape and assault. He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling behavior and assult resulting in bodily harm in October 2022. In January, 2023 the charges were dropped but the youngster was unable to make his way back in United’s squad. Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan to Getafe. The 22 year old winger scored 10 goals along with providing 6 assists for La Liga side in 36 appearances.
Marseille close to sign Greenwood
Following his impressive season at Getafe, Greenwood has caught the eyes of several teams. Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli were all interested in signing Greenwood. However, Marseille have now made an impressive bid for the 22 year old winger.
According to Sky Sports, Marseille are prepared to pay £26.7 million to United. It has also been reported that the French side is willing to pay between 40 to 50 percent of Greenwood’s any future sale. Out of the £26.7 million, Marseille will pay fixed price of £23.3 million, while the other £3.4 million will be paid in add-ons.
Marseille’s mayor Benoit Payan said that it would be unacceptable if Greenwood joins Olympique De Marseille. However, Marseille’s new manager Roberto De Zerbi had the back of Greenwood. De Zerbi said that he considers the players joining his side as his sons. In addition, De Zerbi said that he will defend Mason Greenwood publicly no matter what if he joins the club.
