Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is happy with his new signing Raheem Sterling after making his full debut against Bolton Wanderers.
Raheem Sterling made his full Arsenal debut on Wednesday against Bolton in the Carabao Cup. The winger who was a unwanted at Chelsea made a deadline day switch to rivals Arsenal. Since the move he was gunning for his debut which was rewarded on Wednesday. The Englishman even scored his first goal for his new club at the Emirates. It was an exciting day for the Sterling family and the Arteta as both of their choices paid off.
RAHEEM STERLING MOVE TO ARSENAL
The 29 years old was sent to exile at Chelsea after Enzo Maresca publicly stated that Sterling doesn’t fit his system. He was forced to find a new club this summer in order to find more minutes. Man Utd came into the scene with a sensational swap deal in equation with Jadon Sancho moving in the other way. But united were doubtful of him. Then on the deadline day his former colleague Mikel Arteta came in for his services. He was happy to offer that and by night he reached the Arsenal training center to sign in as new Gunners player. It is just a loan deal with no buy option involved a straight one.
People doubted about the prospects of him getting chances with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard already there. Anyway with all the congested fixtures this year Arteta might need some of his experience at times. Sterling is a sort of a player whom you can trust at all times. This is part to his experience at top level . He has now played with four of the so calls ‘top six’ of English football names Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and now at Arsenal. So that winning mentality will be ingrained in him. Arteta insisted ‘He was going to make us better’ when asked about his new signing.
STERLING VS BOLTON
Raheem Sterling made his full debut for Arsenal as he started on left wing along the front three of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. Arteta gave chances to some of the academy graduates in the ranks also. The winger played on left wing and scored and assisted in the match against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup. Sterling first set up academy product Ethan Nwaneri in the 37th minute for the youngster’s first professional goal. And then got himself on the scoresheet later on in the second half.
The English man was lively and rejuvenated with his game. We all know how good a player he is and that was explicit in the match on Wednesday. Even though it was a Cup match against a lower tier team that too at home. We could see that hunger in him to get more minutes to capitalize his opportunities and moreover the hunger to play.
ARTETA ABOUT STERLING
Arteta was happy about the winger’s performance against the League One opposition. Speaking to media he said that “He has started to show some glimpses of what he can do”. And we might have to align with that thought because we saw some of the old Sterling out there.
Arteta said: “Raheem Sterling was great. I think he’s started to show glimpses of what he can do, especially in attacking moments”.
Anyway according to the Gunners boss, Sterling is still not upto the level he wants Physically. Meaning to play consistently for more minutes in the Premier League. So that is something he has to work on to get consistency. With Gabriel Martinelli struggling to perform it would be interesting to see how Mikel Arteta uses Sterling throughout this season.
Once compared with Lionel Messi for the number of goal contributions in a Champions League season. Later relegated to the annex of Cobham training ground. This is now a chance for him to rejuvenate his career with a boss who completely trusts him.
