Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Tomas Araujo who is top target of Chelsea. Araujo who currently plays for Benfica is very highly rated and hence will cost a hefty fee for sure.
Chelsea ‘really like’ Tomas Araujo
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently said that Chelsea really like the Benfica defender. He also said that the Blues have several options for the centre back position. Lastly, he said that Chelsea will surely enter the market for centre back and it can be in january itself.
It is expected as the Blues are not defending well at the moment. They are finding it hard to keep clean sheets. Thiago Silva left the club at the end of last season. Ever since then, the club is lacking leadership and maturity in the backline.
Colwill and Fofana are starting regularly and hence they maybe safe to stay. But Disasi and Badiashile could be soon sold in order to bring new defender in. The Blues were also linked with Antonio Silva, but he has a lot of clubs interested in him.
As of now, Araujo stays the top priority and it could be very good signing. The Portugese is very good at centre back position but can play equally good as a right back. He is still 22 years old and hence fits the Chelsea’s latest system of signing young players too.
Newcastle planning to hijack Chelsea’s plans
As per the report from O Jogo, Newcastle and Crystal Palace have joined Chelsea in the race for Araujo. The Magpies are a big club now and are regularly competing for the top four. They may even promise the young defender more gametime as compared to Chelsea.
Lastly, Benfica will surely demand a hefty fee for Araujo. They have him tied with contract running until 2028 and have a €100 million release clause included in contract.
