Liverpool made just two changes from their draw against West Brom on Sunday, Giorginio Wijnaldum was replaced by James Milner in midfield and Nathaniel Phillips came in defence for Joel Matip.
Jurgen Klopp went with his preferred 4-3-3 formation and their famous front three Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah started the game. Thiago Alcantara registered himself on the substitution bench after his long injury lay off.
Newcastle United made only one change as Miguel Almiron was replaced by Callum Wilson. Steve Bruce opted to go with a 5-4-1 formation as he always does against big sides.

Liverpool didn’t start well enough as Callum Wilson managed to get in behind the Liverpool defence but a great block from Fabinho denied him.
Liverpool had their first chance on the 34 minutes, a great long ball from Jordan Henderson for Salah opened up the Newcastle defence but Salah’s attempt brilliantly saved by Karl Darlow.
Multiple mistakes from Newcastle defender opened up for Liverpool but a great interception from DeAndre Yedlin saved the Magpies.
At the half time mark, a great cross from Mane headed towards the goal by Firminho but another great save from Darlow denied Liverpool from taking the lead in the first half.
Mohamed Salah missed a one on one opportunity in the second half, a great through pass from Firmino. Firmino missed an open net himself, a great corner from Andrew Robertson but Firmino puts it wide from the handshaking distance.
Newcastle United had a great opportunity from a set-piece but saved brilliantly by Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.
Liverpool had another great opportunity but brilliantly cleared off the line by Newcastle United.
In the end, Liverpool had another attempt on target from a corner but Karl Darlow saved the day brilliantly for Newcastle.

Jordan Henderson(CM) – (7/10)(Liverpool): He was terrific in the middle of the park. Made two excellent long passes to open up the stubborn Newcastle defence.
Mohamed Salah(RW) – (5/10)(Liverpool) Missed two glorious opportunity to give his team crucial three points but could not convert either of his chances.
Liverpool’s next match is away to Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium on the 4th of January and Newcastle will play against Leicester City at home on Sunday.
