NorthEast United FC face Chennaiyin FC in the third match of their Hero Indian Super League campaign. The Khalid Jamil-coached side are still looking for opening their account in the league after missing out on wins in the first 2 matches. Whereas, the Supermachans are keen on maintaining their winning streak after a narrow win against Hyderabad FC.
The Highlanders lost 4-2 to Bengaluru and then escaped with a goalless draw against Kerala Blasters. On the other hand, Bozidar Bandovic’s Chennaiyin got off to a winning start beating the Nizams 1-0 in their opening fixture. Northeast United\are in 9th place in the ISL standings while Chennaiyin are in 6th place.
Will the first-ever Indian coach to be announced as head coach for an ISL club lead Northeast United towards glory or will the Serbian coach walk away with yet another win?
NorthEast United FC
NorthEast United have had less pre-season preparation when compared to the other ISL teams. However, they have been a surprise package last time around since the emergency appointment of Khalid Jamil replacing Gerard Nus. In the 16 matches played under Jamil, the club have had six wins, six draws and just four losses.
Last season, the Reds continued their dream run in the league finishing at 3rd place and later losing to ATK Mohun Bagan in the semi-finals. It hasn’t been an ideal start for them but the club have shown glimpses of brilliance in their tough draw against the Blasters. Last season, both the sides failed to win as the duels ended as 0-0 and 3-3 draws respectively.
The two-time ISL champions have been looking impressive in their opening match with Anirudh Thapa offered a role as the skipper. Despite failing to dominate, the Blues from Tamil Nadu came up on top offensively and defensively against one of the trickiest teams in ISL, Hyderabad FC. Last season, they had to finish at 8th position with just three wins. However, the opening win provides new expectations.
Both sides have met 14 times, Northeast winning six times, Chennaiyin winning three times and the rest 5 matches ended as a stalemate. Bandovic’s side are better prepared as compared to the Highlanders and would be looking ahead for yet another win on the bag.
NorthEast United FC
Khalid Jamil has no injury concerns for his side. He would be fielding an almost similar lineup which was fielded during the 0-0 draw against Kerala Blasters.
Rafael Crivellaro would be out for four weeks as he is currently working on his rehabilitation. Except for Crivellaro, the rest of the players are fit and would be available for selection.
