India‘s dream for qualifying FIFA 2022 has gone downhill from the onset, having lost to Oman 1-2 in the opening game. Till now, the Blue Tigers have played five matches, lost two, and shared points in the remaining ones, which has ended all but India’s hope of progressing to the next round. The hope of qualify for AFC Asian Cup 2023 is still there.

With three remaining group stage matches scheduled for June, Igor Stimac’s men can well qualify for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup by finishing as the third-placed team. The coach has already given his statement that his main focus is to qualify for the continental meetup.

Head coach Igor Stimac interacted with the media ahead of the international friendly with Oman on Thursday. Igor Stimac began the press conference by stating his point of view regarding the selection of players for the Indian football team. He stated that the selection has been done in regards with the current form and overall performance of the players instead of goin for the big names,

“When I became the National Team coach, I even mentioned to Sunil (Chhetri) that he also needs to fight for his position. This fight goes on forever. Without this continuous fight, there is no success,” Igor Stimac said.

“Our target — from the beginning, has been to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup (2023). We have three games left in this stage of the Qualifiers. We are trying to provide enough time for the players to put in quality work before those games,” Igor Stimac stressed.

Igor Stimac is yet to find a stable starting line-up for the Indian football team. Stimac will have to get his act together soon if he wishes to lead the Indian football team into the AFC Asian Cup 2023. He insisted on the quality of football he plans to implement. He put up ten debutants against Oman in a recent friendly which shows he’s still testing and trying to get the best players who suit the pressing system he wants to achieve in longer term. It’s new for some players the different approach in place in the national team setup but the glimpses of proactive football are there in this game.
