A director has expressed frustration over an unpaid fee linked to new Arsenal signing.
New Arsenal signing turns sour
Last summer, Martin Zubimendi left Real Sociedad for Arsenal. The deal was simple and straightforward without any major issues.
Although, other teams were also interested and made offers. But, the Spanish player had already made it clear that he wanted to join the squad of Mikel Arteta. His choice has more or less been confirmed already. That he is a player well counted on by the coach. In the first twelve games at Arsenal, he played a total of one thousand minutes.
But, behind that success story, frustration is brewing in Spain. Mundo Deportivo reports that Zubimendi’s former academy, Antiguoko, believes it is owed €1m as part of the move. The Basque club, which played a major role in shaping the player’s early career before Real Sociedad took him in 2011, claims the payment clause hasn’t been honored.
Tensions rise between old partners
Antiguoko’s technical director, Roberto Montiel, didn’t hide his anger over the situation. He pointed a finger at Real Sociedad for not honoring the previous deals.
In addition, he suggests what he considers to be a wrong treatment of a club that contributed to the development of one of the most talented Spanish midfielders in the area of play.
For Antiguoko, this isn’t just about money. It’s about recognition and respect for the grassroots work that helped Zubimendi reach the top.
Although, there is no official reply from Real Sociedad or Arsenal. Still, the growing issue took over what seemed to be a smooth move. It is a sign that even big moves can mute the smaller clubs for a prolonged period.
Author’s opinion:
This issue shows how easily football’s money trail can turn messy. Arsenal may have done their part, but Real Sociedad must look into the issue quickly before it taints the name that took years to build.
