How Guardiola Tactically Outclassed Lampard on Sunday? Tactical Analysis

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City smashed Chelsea at their backyard by 3-1 in Premier League on Sunday. The game was like men vs boys at times, where Chelsea didn’t know what to do.

The manner of defeat made the Chelsea board disappointed who always backed Frank Lampard. This means Lampard is now on the hot seat if he can’t change his team’s poor form he might get the sack in the coming weeks or months.

Chelsea now with only 4 points in the last 6 matches and lost 4 of those matches which is a relegation form. They went down from the title contender to 8th place and 7 points away from the top.

Manchester City are now unbeaten in the last 11 games in all competitions, 7 of those in the Premier League. They earned 17 points in the last 7 league games after starting the season slowly for their standard.

Where Guardiola checkmated Lampard tactically:

In the absence of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, Pep chose to go with the false nine system, he put Kevin De Bruyne as the false nine what he used to do in Barcelona with Lionel Messi.

Pep Guardiola had his success with this formation with Manchester City last season. He played with this system in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United and the Champions League first leg of the round of 16 in Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid.

The movement in the midfield of Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, and Bernardo Silva was too much to handle for Chelsea midfield who couldn’t realise what to do, they were just running around with no purpose.

Chelsea’s defensive pair Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva looked flustered if they should follow the run of De Bruyne or not as Thiago Silva said himself that the movement in the midfield of City making them confused about what should they do.

Although Manchester City didn’t dominate the ball for the whole 90 minutes as they usually do when they had it they were very direct and took full advantage of it. They haven’t been great in this season but they stored their best match for a big occasion like this.

The Mistakes that Lampard Made:

The biggest mistake from Frank Lampard was to pick Hakim Ziyech in the team for a game of this magnitude and high intensity who hasn’t played football for almost a month. The result was Ziyech looked lost in the game.

The second mistake was he chose to go very expensive style of football against Manchester City which is like inviting the inevitable. And it happened exactly that, Chelsea were thrashed inside the 35 minutes.

After conceding two goals in no time Frank Lampard should’ve changed his approach and told his wingers to go in midfield and make the midfield five and try to be compact and stay in the game. But rather than doing that he did nothing and conceded the third and went completely out of the game.

Frank Lampard should’ve identified the approach of Guardiola after looking at the team sheet, how City are going to play and their previous success with this formation but Lampard had no answer to this test.

Frank Lampard looked completely shell shocked in the sideline after what was happening with his team and he was looked completely amateur against the mastermind Pep Guardiola.
