Players who played their last match for FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona went through a transition period which led to a poor season for them. They only managed to get their hands on Copa Del Rey after beating Athletic Bilbao in the final

They went to finish third at the La Liga table with 83 points in 38 matches.  This is almost after 13 years that they fail to secure the top two positions in the league. They last finished third back in the 2007/08 season, below Real Madrid and Villareal.

Barcelona was also eliminated from the Champions League round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain this season. They were defeated 5-2 in aggregate and fail to qualify for the quarter-finals. They also lost to the Athletic club in the final of Supercopa de Espana.

But, we cannot be blaming the Catalan side, as they suffered a lot due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Barcelona is currently going through a financial crisis due, while their plan of transforming the club also failed.

Barcelona finished their season with a win against Eibar, but the fans may have seen some of their players play for the Catalan club for the last time. There is a list of 14 players who have been lined up for a transfer, while some of the players might leave as their contract expires.

We cannot be sure about who will be leaving or who chooses to stay at the club. But with the recent rumors around we can tell which players might have played their last match for Barcelona.

5 players who played their last match for Barcelona

Sergio Busquets

Busquets is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation. He has helped Barcelona win 8 La Ligas.,7 Copa Del Rey’s, and 4 Champions Leagues during his time with the club.

The defensive midfielder has had a regular place in Barcelona’s starting line-up this season, making 50 appearances in all competitions. His current contract with Barcelona runs until 2023, but the club might offload him because of his age and wage bill.

Jordi Alba

Jordi Alba is a product of Barcelona’s youth academy. He, however, joined Valencia in 2007 and was re-signed by Barcelona in 2012. He became one of the world’s best left-backs during his time with the Catalans. While making the position his own for almost a decade.

The Spaniard has been in superb form this season, scoring five goals and providing 15 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions. His current contract with Barcelona is set to run until 2024, but the club might sell him because of his age and high wage bill.

Sergi Roberto

The Barcelona player has been at the club all his life. He is a La Masia product. He played as a central midfielder every season but now has become a right back. The player, however, is not Barcelona quality anymore.

He has been mainly used as a backup in the team by Koeman this season and has appeared only nine times. While he has been out most of the season due to the injury he faced. He seems to be of no use for the Catalans now and will be shown the exit door this summer.

Lionel Messi

The club legend is out of contract on 30 June and theoretically has been free to speak to other clubs from January due to the expiration date. Last summer he attempted to leave the club as a free agent. But he backed down on his stance as he did not want to go to court to force the move, and he stayed for this campaign.

Messi has scored a club record of 672 goals in 778 first-team appearances at the Catalan giants, the only club he has ever represented. But with no news of contract renewal, it seems he could be representing some other club from next season.

Gerard Pique

Pique is clearly past his best. Initially in the early 2010s was when he had his golden days winning multiple titles with Barcelona. He was one of those cutting-edge players who figured out how to play with the ball from the back and could charge forward.

In any case, for this player, he is presently old and age has gotten up to speed with him. Pique could be sacrificed by the club for signing some new young center back.
