Raheem Sterling given unexpected squad number by Arsenal

Arsenal had a good summer transfer window as they made 5 signings. Out of those 3 are on permanent basis whereas 2 players have joined them on loan. Gunners wanted to sign a winger this summer. However, they fell short of time to land a new superstar. Later, Arsenal decided to sign Raheem Sterling as he was looking for a new club. Gunners signed Sterling on the deadline day of transfer window on loan.

Sterling was told by the new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to find a new club. Maresca made it clear that the winger was not part of his plans. Sterling was even linked with Manchester United as a part of swap deal. However, United decided to not go forward with that deal. Later, Sterling was offered to Gunners who were in need of winger. Reiss Nelson joined Fulham on loan on the deadline day. This made Arsenal to find a temporary solution.

Luckily for Arsenal, Sterling was still available. In addition, he also has history with Mikel Arteta. Sterling and Arteta worked together at Manchester City. Arteta was assistant manager at City and that was the time when Sterling was on top of his game. Sterling will inject Gunners with experience and attacking depth. He has chance to make a bold statement if he makes his Arsenal debut against their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspurs.

Sterling will wear number 30 for Arsenal

Sterling was said to wear number 10 for Gunners this season. Emile Smith Rowe wore number 10 earlier but has now joined Fulham on permanent basis. However, Arsenal have handed the 29 year old winger number 30 and announced on the official Arsenal website.

Sterling also had many other options available. He was able to choose between number 14, 16, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28. However, he opted to wear number 30 which was used by Matt Turner last season.
