The summer transfer window ended last night with many clubs making last hour signings. Arsenal were one of them as they managed to sign Raheem Sterling on a season long loan from Chelsea. Sterling was not linked with Gunners for majority of summer. However, Arteta felt a need to sign an attacking player due to the current circumstances. On the other hand, Chelsea have signed Jadon Sancho on loan with an obligation to buy from Manchester United.
Firstly, Gunners were looking to sign a striker and a winger. Later, they decided to not go for an attacking player this summer due to being short on time. However, they have sold many players this summer. They sold Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe from attacking unit permanently. Reiss Nelson made a deadline day loan move to Fulham. In addition, Gabriel Jesus has been injured adding to Arteta’s problem list. This forced the club to sign Sterling as a temporary solution.
How will Sterling help Arsenal in the title race
Firstly, Sterling has a lot of experience in the Premier League. Arsenal is going to be his fourth out of top six clubs in England. In addition, he has won four Premier League titles and also made 82 appearances for England. Sterling has also worked with Mikel Arteta and this will be an added advantage for the Gunners. The 29 year old winger mainly plays as left winger. However, he can equally adapt on the right flank and reduce the overload of Bukayo Saka. Sterling can also play in the middle as false nine occasionally.
According to Sky Sports, Sterling’s camp has spoken highly about the player and his desires. Sterling wants to add to his trophy cabinet and make his way back into the England national team. Sterling said after signing the contract that joining Arsenal is really an unbelievable feeling. He added that it is the perfect fit for him. It will be intersting to see wheter Sterling is able to redeem himself in the Gunners jersey this season. It will also be interesting to witness wheter Sterling helps Gunners to bring down his former club Manchester City.
