UEFA has confirmed the Champions League(UCL) round of 16 first leg match between RB Leipzig and Liverpool FC will take place at Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

The match date(Feb 17th) and the kick-off time (1:30 am) will remain the same.

The change in venue, previously scheduled to take place at the Red Bull arena is due to Germany’s new coronavirus protocols.

It was reported on Thursday that Liverpool would be unable to travel to Germany for the UCL fixture on February 16. The country’s coronavirus protocols forced Leipzig to come up with an alternative venue.

Leipzig risked forfeiting the match 3-0 if they couldn’t come up with an alternative native venue for the UCL tie. Liverpool have gained an advantage before even having to touch the ball as Leipzig have lost their home advantage due to the change in venue.

Supporters will still be unable to attend the match due to stringent Covid-19 laws in Hungary. The Puskas Arena hosts the home games of the Hungarian national team and some of the upcoming UEFA Euro 2021 matches.

Ferencvaros also played two of its home games in the 2020-2021 UCL group stage at the Puskas Arena.
