Real Madrid boss Ancelotti denies humiliation claim after Supercopa loss

On Sunday, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in the Spanish Super Cup final under Xavi‘s impressive management. However, Carlo Ancelotti dismissed the notion that the team was embarrassed.

It was a resounding 3-0 victory for Barcelona in Saudi Arabia, with Gavi, Robert Lewandowski, and Pedri on the scoresheet. Karim Benzema did lessen Real Madrid’s humiliation after finding the back of the net in the 92nd minute. Gavi has been the star of the match assisting 2 goals and also scoring one.

What did Ancelotti say?

In January, Real Madrid looks like a struggling squad, losing 2-1 to Villarreal. They were unable to achieve the kind of success they enjoyed in 2021/22.

However, as evidence, Ancelotti referred to Real’s October 3-1 victory over Barcelona in October. He has claimed it to be a lesson of not being too hard on themselves from one defeat.

Ancelotti claimed:

“Our mistakes determined the outcome of the game. We didn’t look after the ball and they scored two goals as a result. The game changed from there. It was a bad match for everyone but it wasn’t down to a lack of spirit.”

“In my mind we don’t talk about humiliation, that’s a bit too far. Sometimes in sport you win and sometimes you’re beaten. We lost a game against Barcelona, like we beat them in La Liga. They played better and deserved it.”

“The team’s not going through its best moment, but we have to dig in, because this team’s got the quality to come back and be competitive in every competition we’re still in. We’re hurting right now, because we usually win finals, but there are still plenty of trophies to play for and we’ll fight right until the end.”

“We have to pick ourselves up and think about what we’re going to do. We’ll make sure we’re tough and competitive again, but we have to improve defensively. This is where we’re struggling at the moment.”

Real Madrid is currently 3 points behind Barcelona and will also face Liverpool in their Round of 16 draws. However, Ancelotti assured that the club will give them all to receive silverware until the end of the season.
