River Plate star Franco Mastantuono is closing in on a move to Real Madrid, dealing a blow to Manchester United’s hopes of signing him.
Real Madrid Take the Lead in Franco Mastantuono Chase
Real Madrid missed out on French defender Leny Yoro to Manchester United last June. But, now they are looking to strike back by signing Argentine wonderkid Franco Mastantuono. Utd signed Yoro for a big £52 million after his breakout season with Lille. Now, it’s Real’s turn to move early. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Real has officially approached River Plate. The player’s agents are ready to begin talks.
The 17-year-old is one of Argentina’s top talents. Reportedly, he dreams of wearing the white jersey at the Santiago Bernabéu. That puts the Spanish side firmly in the driver’s seat. In addition, PSG are also keeping tabs on the player.
Meanwhile, River Plate are standing firm on Mastantuono’s £38.5 million release clause. Also, the youngster will not turn 18 until August. So, any transfer is a bit more complicated.
United Shift Focus to Ian Subiabre After Setback
While the youngster looks Madrid-bound, Manchester Utd aren’t walking away from River Plate empty-handed. Reports suggest the Red Devils have a keen eye on another rising talent from the Argentine club. They are looking at 18-year-old winger Ian Subiabre. Although, Subiabre hasn’t made as big an impact on the River first team as Mastantuono. But, he’s made waves at the youth international level for Argentina.
Playing mainly on the left wing, he has already managed 16 senior appearances and scored once. It looks like Ruben Amorim’s top target is likely slipping through their fingers. However, Utd will turn their eyes to players like Subiabre to bolster their youth ranks.
The summer window could still bring a new River Plate star to Old Trafford. Real Madrid are making their moves, United must act fast to stay relevant in the race.
