Chelsea signed Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United in the last hours of the deadline day on 30th August. The Blues never planned on signing the English winger throughout the transfer window. But interests sprouted for Sancho when new manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the exclusion of Raheem Sterling from his squad list.
Since then Chelsea’s co-director in recruitment Joe Shields began to monitor Sancho. Shields presented a accurate data of the winger during his days with Borussia Dortmund. As a evidence that the Englishman can fit in the system.
The Red Devils were seeking a price of £40m for Sancho but eventually they lowered up the price. This increased the desire of Chelsea to sign the Englishman. The loan includes an obligation to buy next season. Transfer fee is expected to be around £20m-£25m, depending on Chelsea’s standing in the table at the end of the season. To trigger that clause Chelsea would need to finish 14th at worst in the table. The higher they will finish the more United would get.
Business and Managerial point of view of the deal
United bought Sancho from Dortmund in 2021 for a whopping fee of £73m. Sancho was supposed to be an important player for the Red Devils but he never managed to live up to his level in the Premier League. The Englishman made 79 competitive appearances for United and only managed to score 11 goals & 6 assists.
Eventually he was sent on loan to his former side Dortmund during the winter transfer window. There he lit up the Europe in storm with his performances as Dortmund went to the finals of the UEFA Champions League. The BVB’s beaten European giants like PSV, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint Germain in the knockout rounds where Sancho was an important player behind the glory.
He returned at the Old Trafford after the loan deal expired at the end of the season. Fans thought the Englishman will be staying at United but the management were open to sell Sancho as there have been some issues between the player and manager Erik Ten Hag.
According to 90min Chelsea were delighted with the price of the winger. They believe either Sancho will be a stand out performer for the Blues or he will be sold on a similar fee if things doesn’t workout. Sancho have also taken a pay cut for the move. He will be on a lower salary than Sterling, who already joined Arsenal on loan. Overall Chelsea have lowered their wage bill by signing Sancho and sending Sterling away.
Not only it is a financially appealing deal but even Maresca was impressed by Sancho’s game. The new manager likes wingers who can take on defenders and can finish well in the box. The Chelsea management believes Sancho can offer that to the team as he is very skillful.
Man United Legend’s take on the deal
Man United legend Andy Cole believes this deal can come out to be a bargain for the West London club.
In an interview with Betfred he remarked, “Jadon’s a very talented kid and he’s still only 24 years old, so if Chelsea can get the best out of him like Borussia Dortmund did last season, then it would be a steal.”
He even beliefs Sancho has so much ‘unlocked potential’ and if the Blues can trigger them Sancho can be one of the best player for Chelsea. But Cole also stated that he is going to struggle like every other individual in a star-stacked team like Chelsea. As they can only start 11 players in the match it will be interesting to see how Chelsea uses Sancho.
Sancho was presented to the fans on 1st September when they clashed against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He will be training with the squad during the international break. All eyes will be on Sancho as he could make his debut for the Blues against Bournemouth on 14th of September.
