Reviewing Chelsea’s business in the transfer window

Chelsea have been a big mess ever since Todd Boehly became their owner in 2022. They have changed their manager three times in the last two years. But no good results came out since the departure of Thomas Tuchel. From the outside it may look like Chelsea have been doing bad in the transfer market by just signing players but they have done some good business in the 2023-24 summer transfer window.

They have made around £233m through sales last season. The list of players who were sold last season includes-

  1. Kai Havertz to Arsenal (£63m)
  2. Mason Mount to Manchester United (£54m)
  3. Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City (£25m)
  4. Kalidou Koulibaly to Al Hilal (£19.5m)
  5. Christian Pulisic to AC Milan (£17m)
  6. Ruben Loftus-Cheek to AC Milan (£15m)
  7. Edouard Mendy to Al Ahli (£15m)

The Blues were also very busy in the summer transfer window this season. The owners showed their full support to the newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca loves to have options in his squad. He places his faith on a deep build-up play, with short passes from the backline. It helps to beat the pressing of the opposition side.

Chelsea’s current Squad analysis

Chelsea will be competing in five different competitions for the 2024-25 season. It includes- Premier League, UEFA Conference League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the upcoming Club World Cup in 2025. So, Maresca believes, to endure such a long season they need as much squad depth as possible to prevent injuries. Right now Chelsea have 30 players in their first team list. List includes 4 goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 7 midfielders and 9 forwards.

The Blues have managed to sign 12 professional players in this window. And also promoted a few academy players in their first team-squad. While fans and pundits are again criticizing Chelsea for their long signing list, Maresca believes they still have lack of depth in their squad.

Summary of the Blues’ transfer window

As per the reports of Sky Sports Chelsea have spent around £219.6m in the transfer window this season. And of course they were the top spenders of the 2024/25 summer transfer window. But the Blues have also managed to receive £153.3m through the sells and also making them one of the top earners of the transfer window.

Chelsea has spent the most in the last 5 years in the Premier League. They’ve been wild as they have spent close to £1bn since 2022 under the ownership of Todd Boehly. Though the owners are in a loss of £66.3m this season but they would not mind if Chelsea does well in the competitions.

Chelsea’s current average squad age is 23.3 years. The squad is stacked with young potential world class players like Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and others. If the management is not planning on signing more and more players in the upcoming 5-7 years then this investment can turn up good for the Blues.
