Neither City nor Liverpool may be quite the force they once were. But, the Sky Blues were magnificent in their comeback triumph. The praise for City was given to Julian Alvarez and Jack Grealish. Mahrez overpowers Liverpool
Mahrez unnerved Liverpool when they didn’t have the ball. He pushed them past their comfort zone and letting City’s unified midfield take charge. He forced Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to move out of position as Robertson sprinted belatedly to support them.
After the break, City took the lead thanks in large part to him. He picked up a clever pass from Alvarez and crossed for Kevin De Bruyne to score past a helpless Alisson.“Mahrez overtaken Didier Drogba as the African player with the most assists in the Premier League with his fifth assist of the year and 56th overall”
The assist was Mahrez’s 56th, surpassing Drogba’s long-standing record of 55 assists. Salah follows closely with 54, while his former teammate Sadio Mane left with 38 to his name. In particular, Mahrez’s movement infield from the right flank prior to Alvarez’s equaliser before the half-hour mark put Liverpool’s defence on the back foot. Mahrez finished the game with a carry distance of 430 meters, the highest in the division.
“Superb result and stellar performance from everyone today”
“We keep believing always.”
Mahrez posted on Instagram after the match.
Two years ago, Salah also broke a Drogba record by becoming the Premier League’s all-time top-scoring African player. However he couldn’t match City’s brilliance and was substituted with 20 minutes remaining.
