Romeo Lavia not happy with Robert Sanchez in the Premier League opener

Romeo Lavia was the standout player in the opener for Chelsea however was not impressed by the performance of Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea began their Premier League season facing defending champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. The team faced a 2-0 loss at their home. Fans were not expecting or at least wanted such a start under Enzo Maresca this year. The team trailed 1-0 after an early goal from Erling Haaland in the 18th minute which was doubled up by Mateo Kovacic late in the second half. The former Chelsea player made an impressive finish to beat Sanchez and double the lead for the defending champions. From the looks of it, Man City is once again ready to make another title charge.

As far as the Chelsea midfield is concerned, Romeo Lavia was the standout player for the Blues. He stood up to his role in the midfield getting the balls out of the awkward areas. He beautifully managed the ball to get it further in Chelsea’s attack before he was substituted off in the second half.

Chelsea fans were also visibly happy with the performance of the 20 year old. Lavia had to miss the first season at Stamford Bridge due to an injury. Regardless, he managed to show us what we had been missing all this time. Many fans praised his performance on X.

Lavia was subbed off after 66 minutes, but we could see him being visibly frustrated by one player before going out. Early into the second, he was not happy with the actions of his teammate on the pitch.

Romeo Lavia frustrated by Robert Sanchez as Chelsea lost 2-0

There was a moment in the game yesterday which saw Robert Sanchez making a rather awkward pass. The pass from the back gave City another chance to score. However, luckily the opportunity collapsed.

Regardless, Lavia was visibly frustrated by the pass although Sanchez made a couple of god saves in the first half. Once the ball went out of play, the Sky Sports coverage showed Lavia giving an angry gesture to his teammate for putting the side under pressure and almost doubling the lead.

It is understood that Sanchez has visible pressure on him to impress the Blues given he hasn’t impressed everyone since his move to Stamford Bridge at a cost of £25m.

Still, the keeper managed an average performance overall giving some good saves crucial for the team.

The Blues sign Filip Jorgensen

To address the goalkeeper position this summer, Chelsea has signed Filip Jorgensen. Regardless, Enzo Maresca kept his faith in Robert Sanchez for the season opener. Sanchez already has a season to his name at West London. Not only that, we didn’t see any new signings in the starting lineup meaning the new manager is taking his time.

Further, Djordje Petrovic could not be seen in the season opener. The reports continue to link him to a move out of the Stamford Bridge and he doesn’t seem to be a part of the plans for Maresca either. So a move out makes obvious sense.

Meanwhile, Lavia has clearly shown that he needs to be at the forefront of the plans in the future. Maresca needs to keep him in the opening lineup for all the matches in the future this season. He needs to be given the top priority for Chelsea midfield given how he performed in the match against Man City. He was for sure the standout performer.
