Brazilian wonderkid

In the clash between Real Madrid and Real Vallodolid, Vinicius Junior faced disgusting racial abuse. Real Valladolid President and former Brazilian international, Ronaldo backs Vinicius Junior against racists.

In the last match of the calendar year, Karim Benzema’s two late goals secured a crucial victory for the Merengues which now sees them in the second spot on the table. However, horrific racial abuse hurled at the Real Madrid star marred the night.

Luka Modric came on for Vinicius at the 88th-minute mark. This is when opposing fans hurled abuses and objects at the Brazilian international. The video went viral on social media and it was condemned publicly by Ronaldo Nazario.

Vinicius Junior has been facing racial abuse for quite some time now. During an interview with El Chiringuito, Pedro Bravo referred to Vinicius Junior as a “monkey” on live Spanish TV. He’s faced racial abuse against city rivals, Atletico Madrid, in a match earlier this season. Brazilian internationals Neymar, Raphinha, and legend, Pele, came out in support of Vinicius and asked him not to stop his dancing celebrations.

It was disheartening to see Vinicius Junior tweet how La Liga takes no action against racists as all three previous infractions went unpunished. Javier Tebas, La Liga president went on a backfoot and got defensive, claiming La Liga “always” takes action.

It is about time authorities start banning racists and xenophobes from football stadiums. It would result not only in a better viewing atmosphere but would also enable the players to play their hearts out.
