Ronaldo is the first recipient of the Paolo Rossi award

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Ronaldo will be the first recipient of the Paolo Rossi award. Italian Football lost one of their greatest legends in Paolo Rossi last year. Paolo passed away at the age of 64 after losing his battle against lung cancer.

The summer of 1982 was his career defining period as Italy won the World Cup. He became a national hero scoring six goals including one in the final. The Italians beat West Germany 3-1 in the finals to clinch the trophy for the third time then. His heroics won him the Golden Ball and Golden Boot. Only Garrincha and Mario Kempes have won all three awards in the same tournament. Later that he year, he was awarded the Ballon d’or.

The Serie A have decided to rename the Serie A top-scorer award to the “Paolo Rossi Award”. His glory days were at his time at Juventus who had signed him for a then world-record fee. Coincidentally, the first recipient of the prestigious award will be a Juventus player. And not just any Juventus player, it’s five-time Ballon d’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was the top scorer of the 2020/21 season after smashing the net 29 times. This was despite his battle with COVID-19 at the start of the season and a dry spell around April. Ronaldo was also awarded Serie A’s MVP striker award apart from the “Paolo Rossi Award”.
