Ronaldo urged to leave Manchester United in the summer

Football pundit Paul Merson believes Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in Manchester United’s new boss Erik ten Hag’s plan for next season and the Portuguese should leave the club at the end of this campaign.

The 37-year-old made a return to his former club last summer from Juventus and displayed a productive performance despite being surrounded by an underperforming squad, scoring 24 goals and notching up three assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Speaking on Sportskeeda, Merson claimed that this should be the last season of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United. Given the Portuguese superstar would want to play in the Champions League next season. And the Red Devils are likely to be not in that competition next season.

The pundit further stated that the new incoming boss Erik Ten Hag might not want to rebuild a squad with a 37-year-old at his disposal. PSG could be a perfect destination for the forward and pairing up with Lionel Messi would be a great spectacle for world football. Merson said:

“This might be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last year in the Premier League. He’ll want to play in the Champions League – he’s played in it all his career. I’d be surprised if Erik ten Hag wants him there, to be honest – he’s trying to build his team, and Ronaldo is 37 years old.

“PSG could go for him and make him their short-term replacement for Kylian Mbappe. PSG only want one thing – the Champions League. Ronaldo is a proven asset in the competition – he’s scored goals, he sells shirts, he’s done it all.

“Ligue 1 is an easy league, and Ronaldo will be able to focus on the Champions League at PSG. With Lionel Messi already at the club, we may well see two of the greatest players of all time playing for the same team.”

Will Ronaldo leave Manchester United this summer?

Cristiano Ronaldo still has one year left in his current contract with an option to extend the deal for one more year at Manchester United. And it is expected that the Portuguese could remain at the club for next season.

Although the 37-year-old would have wanted to play in the Champions League next season. It is hard to believe that anyone would pay a transfer fee for him to price him away from the Old Trafford stadium.
