Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are reportedly open to discussing a swap between Saúl Ñíguez and Antoine Griezmann.
Griezmann’s future at the club seems uncertain due to the ongoing financial crisis. In an attempt to reduce their wage bill to accommodate Messi, Barca might need to part ways with the Frenchman.
Spanish media report that Saúl Ñíguez could head the other way. The 26-year-old endured a poor 2020/21 season but Atletico went on to win the league anyway. The midfielder is expected to leave Atletico but his destination remains unclear. Liverpool happen to be potential suitors.
Barcelona are still reeling from losing out on Giorgino Wijnaldum to PSG. This is where Saúl comes in. His versatility, energy and experience makes him the perfect box-to-box option for Ronald Koeman.
Saúl’s salary is considerably lower than Griezmann’s, and he won’t even have to leave Spain. Koeman is open to Griezmann’s departure if it ensures Lionel Messi stays.
As for Griezmann, his two-year spell at the Camp Nou produced underwhelming results. The French international made a good start to the 2020/21 season, netting 13 times and assisting 7.
However, his domestic form since his €120,000,000 move has been inconsistent. As a winger, Griezmann has noticeably struggled. Having left Atletico to win trophies, he has claimed only a solitary Copa del Rey in two seasons.
Such a deal would not be easy but both clubs are confident it could be a win-win situation.
