FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that Sergio Busquets will be the first captain for the next season as Lionel Messi left Camp Nou. Gerard pique has been promoted to the second captain and joining in third is Sergi Roberto, while Jordi Alba is the fourth captain.

Lionel Messi was named the first captain of Barcelona since 2018/19 following the departure of Andres Iniesta. The Catalans won two trophies La Liga and Copa Del Ray under Messi’s leadership in the last three seasons. But Messi’s journey at Barcelona ended after 21 years after the club failed to offer a new contract to him due to La Liga’s financial fair play. Following which the captain’s armband will be pass onto Sergio Busquets.

Busquets is playing for Barcelona first team since September 1, 2008, and has appeared 629 times for the Catalans. The 33-year-old was the second captain after Messi since 2018/19 and now he would be the first captain after Messi’s departure this summer. The Spaniard led the team by wearing the armband against Juventus in the Joan Gamper trophy. After beating Juventus by 3-0 Busquets talked about being the first captain and Messi.

Busquets said “It’s an honour to arrive here as the first-team captain of the best club in the world. I’ve had great examples like Puyol, Xavi, and Leo. I will try to be up to standard. I want to have a special memory for Leo,”. Thanks for taking Barca to the top, making history. Being the best in the world and beating all individual and collective records. Eternal thanks, Leo.

It is for the very first time Barcelona will start a season without Messi in the team. The Catalans’ new season starts this Sunday as they face Real Sociedad in La Liga Santander.
