Inter Milan was heavily linked with a move for Paulo Dybala after his contract with Juventus expired. The Argentine playmaker was unable to agree on a contract extension with the Bianconeri due to wage issues. The Nerazzurri did not sign the player eventually due to a lack of space in the squad. Financially it was not viable for the club to sign the Argentina international if another forward was not sold.
Romelu Lukaku was re-signed from Chelsea this summer on an initial loan deal to bolster the attack. The acquisition of the Belgian meant that the club needed to sell either Edin Dzeko or Joaquin Correa in order to make space for Paulo Dybala. Lautaro Martinez signed a new contract with the club last season and is a central part of the project. So the only options to make way were Dzeko or Correa.
However, the club did not sell either of the two players and eventually let Paulo Dybala go elsewhere. The Argentine playmaker was signed by direct rivals, AS Roma this summer. The former Juventus man has settled in at AS Roma very well and contributed to 6 goals in 7 league appearances. Whereas Inter Milan forwards have combined to contribute just 11 goals in the first 8 games.
Simone Inzaghi chose Joaquin Correa over Paulo Dybala
The club President, Steven Zhang had approved the signing of Paulo Dybala provided they sell Joaquin Correa this summer. Edin Dzeko was considered important over Correa because of his impact and his role in the squad. The Bosnian acts as a direct backup to Romelu Lukaku who is struggling with injury this season. However, the Manager chose to trust Joaquin Correa over the Argentina international.
Simone Inzaghi wanted to keep Joaquin Correa and trusts the player will perform for the club this season. The pair have worked together before at Lazio and share a good rapport. However, it is certainly a questionable decision at this point.
Inter Milan sits in 9th position in the Serie A table. They are 4 points behind AS Roma and 8 points off Napoli, the league leaders. Joaquin Correa has contributed to just 3 goals in 8 games this season whereas Paulo Dybala has doubled these numbers in one less game. Joaquin Correa has not proved to be a good signing for Inter Milan. The player has just scored 8 goals in 47 appearances for the club.
When you look at the numbers produced by Correa and Dybala, you are compelled to wonder if the decision was right. Paulo Dybala is a proven goal scorer and playmaker in Serie A. The Argentina international has won multiple league titles with Juventus and has a vast experience in the league. He would have improved Inter Milan a lot and complimented their forwards really well. Let’s just hope that this questionable decision of Simone Inzaghi does not cost the club in a major way!!
