French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg Alsace aiming to sign Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic on loan from Chelsea.
Djordje Petrovic is among the seven member list that Chelsea aim to clear out before the transfer window shuts at the end of this month.
Chelsea is over the limit in the goalkeeping department. The Blues currently have a total of nine keepers in their enormous squad. So there’s no surprise in their decision to let go of Petrovic on loan. According to the Athletic, several clubs are interested in signing the 24 year old Serbian. Anyway it is certain that Petrovic will go despite being in the squad of their UECL fixture midweek.
DJORDJE PETROVIC TIME AT CHELSEA
Petrovic joined Chelsea from MLS side New England Revolution in the summer of 2023. He signed a seven year contract with the club. He was left on the bench since newly arrived Robert Sanchez was the first chouce for Pochettino. This was until Sanchez got injured in December of 2023 against Everton and Petrovic was called up to replace him. He made his first start for the club against Sheffield united in the Premier League where he kept a cleansheet.
The Serbian quickly established himself as the number one after impresive performances. In his debut season he made 31 appearences which included a Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. Which unfortunately they lost. Petrovic recorded seven cleansheets in his first season for the club. Chelsea in that season where shambles deffensively and to keep a single cleansheet was a daunting task. Petrovic’s impressive display helped the club secure a respectable sixth position in the table. The club secured a place in Europe for the 2024/25 season. But Pochettino was gone at the end of the season. Now the new Manager Enzo Maresca clearly doesn’t favour Petrovic ahead of Robert Sanchez. The signing of 22 year old keeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal has lowered the chances of Petrovic playing this season. The 24 year old was training with the Chelsea outcast squad earlier this week.
INTEREST FROM STRASBOURG
The French sister club of Chelsea, Racing Club Strasbourg are linked with a move for Petrovic. According to L’Equip The club from Alsace were interested in signing Yvon Mvongo from FC Lorient. But failed to agree a deal since the Ligue 2 side wereonly interests in a permanant sale. Since then the talks have broke down and Starsbourge turned their attention towards the Serbian. Chelsea will be happy to let Petrovic join their sister club since Enzo Maresca has a vast variety of options in that department. Even though talks are underway between both the sister clubs Djordje Petrovic is yet to say yes for the proposed loan move. There are reports from other sources saying several clubs are interested in signing the Serbian but no names yet. Heading towards the final week of the transfer window we will see if he moves on loan or a permanent transfer occurs.
WHAT NEXT FOR PETROVIC?
Despite an impressive first season Chelsea have replaced Petrovic with Jorgensen who is currently the established second choice goalkeeper at the club. He didn’t feature much in the pre-season for Chelsea this year and had a mixed experience compared to the last one. However the trusted source of Nizzar Kinsella from BBC Sport has said that Petrovic is training with the first team ahead of their Europa Conference League tie against Swiss Super League side Servette.
It doesn’t say that he is staying with Chelsea but it is clear he is provided with a chance to impress the new boss. Djordje Petrovic and his camp have a very busy few days ahead in their efforts to find place were he can get some valuable playing time.
