Arsenal were keen to sign Joan Garcia this summer. But the deal did not materialize due to the failed talks with Espanyol. Now, Joan Garcia has spoken for the first time about the failed move.
Gunners were in need of backup keeper this summer. It was because Aaron Ramsdale left the club to join Southampton. Ramsdale lost his starting place to David Raya.
Arsenal came to a conclusion of signing Joan Garcia as a backup keeper. The 23 year old was coming from a very good season with Espanyol. He helped the spanish club to gain the promotion back to La Liga.
Firstly, the player had €25 million release clause but it quickly raised to €30 million. Espanyol were unwilling to part ways for less than that amount. On the other hand, Arsenal were not prepared to spend that much on a backup keeper.
As a result, they deal failed which forced Gunners to sign Norberto Neto on season long loan. Neto is 35 years old and hence Gunners still need to sign another keeper very soon.
Joan Garcia speaks about the failed move to Arsenal
Joan Garcia spoke for the first time about his failed move. From his comments, it seems like he was not too interested to join the North London club which may come as a surprise for many.
“I tried to isolate myself from everything that was being said. I had been given the opportunity to do something I had been fighting for a long time, which was to be Espanyol’s starting goalkeeper, I couldn’t waste that opportunity” – Garcia speaking to Marca.
This may come as a surprise for Arsenal fans but it is right decision from player’s point of view. No player will want to spend the peak years of his career sitting on the bench. Lastly, Garcia also had his say about the next transfer windows linking him to another clubs.
“It is something that I think should not be talked about so much. I try not to let it affect me and try to be isolated, although it is complicated. I think I’m handling it quite well, I cannot control it. It is not affecting me. Whatever will be, will be” – Garcia about him being linked in future.
