Villarreal Club de Futbol, commonly known as Villarreal, is a professional football club based in the Valencian Community of Spain. The club was founded in 1923. Meanwhile, it currently plays in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football. They have a nickname “The Yellow Submarine”. Villarreal is known for its unique yellow home jersey. It has a strong following both locally and internationally.


Villarreal was founded in 1923 under the name Club Atletico Montanesa. The club changed its name several times before finally settling on Villarreal Club de Futbol in 1947. The team had a humble beginning. They played in regional leagues until the 1970s when they finally gained promotion to the Spanish third division. Villarreal also has a rivalry with Levante UD, another Valencian club. Outside of the Valencian region, Villarreal has a less intense but still significant rivalry with regional neighbors Elche CF.
