VILLARREAL

Villarreal Club de Futbol, commonly known as Villarreal, is a professional football club based in the Valencian Community of Spain. The club was founded in 1923. Meanwhile, it currently plays in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football. They have a nickname “The Yellow Submarine”. Villarreal is known for its unique yellow home jersey. It has a strong following both locally and internationally.

History

Villarreal was founded in 1923 under the name Club Atletico Montanesa. The club changed its name several times before finally settling on Villarreal Club de Futbol in 1947. The team had a humble beginning. They played in regional leagues until the 1970s when they finally gained promotion to the Spanish third division. The club’s first major success came in the 1998-1999 season when they won the Segunda Division. They have earned a promotion to La Liga for the first time in their history.

Trophies

Villarreal has yet to win La Liga. However, the club has had considerable success in domestic and international competitions. They won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004. They have also won the Copa del Rey in 2021. The club’s most notable achievement came in the 2020-2021 season when they reached the UEFA Europa League final for the first time in their history. However, they lost to Manchester United in the final.

Rivalries

Villarreal’s biggest rivalry is with fellow Valencian club, Valencia CF. The two teams compete in the Derbi de la Comunitat. It is a highly anticipated local derby. Villarreal also has a rivalry with Levante UD, another Valencian club. Outside of the Valencian region, Villarreal has a less intense but still significant rivalry with regional neighbors Elche CF.
