Timo Werner denied the opportunity to join Manchester United this summer

Timo Werner

Manchester United has succumbed to two defeats in the opening two Premier League fixtures. The Red Devils lost to Brighton on opening day and followed it up with a humiliating defeat to Brentford. The club is in dire need of reinforcements offensively due to the lackluster performances from Marcus Rashford and the injury to Anthony Martial. Reportedly, the club tried to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea before his transfer to RB Leipzig was finalized.

Timo Werner decided to part ways with Chelsea this summer owing to a lack of regular first-team football. The Red Devils expressed an interest in signing the German international to bolster their attacking options. However, Timo Werner decided to return to RB Leipzig instead.

Erik Ten Hag is faced with an uphill battle of overturning the fortunes. Anthony Martial performed well in the pre-season and looked all set to start as the striker for the club. However, the Frenchman is out injured and Manchester United have lacked the cutting edge amidst uncertainty over Cristiano Ronaldo‘s future.

Timo Werner would have suited Ten Hag’s style of play

The German international struggled to score goals at Chelsea amassing just 23 goals in 89 appearances across all competitions. However, the forward was nicknamed “Turbo Timo” due to his electric pace and work rate during the games.

Timo Werner’s work rate and the ability to carry the ball with a blistering pace would have benefitted Manchester United as Erik Ten Hag prefers such forwards. The Dutchman employed Antony in a similar role at Ajax and wanted to sign him at Old Trafford.

However, the valuation slapped on Antony by Ajax has put off Manchester United in their pursuit. The German international preferred to sign for RB Leipzig ahead of the Red Devils. The forward wants to play Champions League football ahead of the World Cup and cement his place in the German National Team.

It’s probably time for Manchester United to focus on more realistic targets as the lack of Champions League football stalled multiple transfer negotiations for the club. Hopefully, Manchester United will be able to secure adequate players to fill the gaps in the squad before the transfer window closes!!
