Todd Boehly and Clearlake rift: updates and possible outcomes

It was reported that there was a rift between Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake capital. Here are the updates and possible outcomes.

We always hear the name Todd Boehly as the owner of Chelsea Football Club. Actually it was a consortium lead by Todd Boehly who bought the club from Roman Abramovic. He not the lone owner of the club Clearlake Capital Group lead by Behdad Eghbali owns 60% of the shares. Eventhough Boehly acts as the chairman majority owners are Clearlake capital. Recently reports had surfaced that there was an ongoing power struggle between both owners and it also said that they even tried to buy each other out.

CHELSEA UNDER Boehly:

The owners of Chelsea have been spending big since they took over the club in 2021. According to the records they have bought more than 45 players in four years at helm of the club. That’s much more than many clubs bought in the last decade. According to the stats from Transfermarkt.com they have spent €1.32 billion on player signings. It is also evident that those spendings have not fruitfully worked yet. Considering the fact that Chelsea have only finished above top 5 only once in the last four years. That too since Boehly and co took total control over the team it never happened.

They have had three managers since 2021 and many players coming in for big money and failed to live up to the billing. Introduced a new marketing strategy or we can say a brilliant loop hole in the FFP rules by providing long contracts to the players. Cole Palmer is currently on a 9 year contract. Nicolas Jackson is set to sign an extension and will be on a 9 year contract. Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Caicedo all signed to 8 year contracts. This was actually new to the European football, before a 5 year contract was the longest any club offered.

Eventhough the owners have bought in brilliant business inputs to European football. And they have also got their hands on some of the upcoming talents in world football like Willian Estevao, Kendry Paez, Mike Penders, Celeb Wiley, Marc Guiu and the list goes on and on. It hasn’t yeilded much in terms of performances and titles. A few years back Chelsea not winning a PL game was something that surprised people. But now, even some of their own fans have come to normalise things when Chelsea drop points at home.

UPDATES AND POSSIBLE OUTCOMES

According to the most reliable BBC Sports journalist Nizar Kinsella, The rift between Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali is descriobed as a ‘cultural shock’. He says that there had been complaints from one side of the camp that Eghbali has been too involved with the footballing decisions at the club. And need to leave that to the experts. But Clearlake capital explains that he only gives financial assistance and the rest is done by the analysts and sporting directors. On the other hand Todd Boehly’s camp insists that he is as involved as he was with the LA Dodgers baseball team where he hand a hands-off approach.

Just examining the current situation at Chelsea we can assume that this oversized squad is not entirely a sporting decision. There was this different idologies and different strategies mixing up and becoming like a mixed fruit salad. And this salad hasn’t been healthy at all for a club like Chelsea. Any manager would love to have squad depth but this is something different.

It is also said that the ownership issue has also affected the promised infrastructure development and the stadium development. The no front of the shirt sponser is alspo due to the ongoing rift between the owners. On the other hand it is evident that the Chelsea women’s team which had little involvement from the new owners have been performing well enough.

Kinsella describes the power struggle asb very Game of thrones like

According to him the possible outcomes are. Todd Boehly and Clearlake capital have to buy each other out, or a unhealthy stalemate reached and it goes on like this, or a third party involvement.
