With Penders incoming, Chelsea have a total of nine goalkeepers in their ranks. He is undeniably a talent but why so much depth in goalkeeping department?

WHY CHELSEA IS BEHIND MIKE PENDERS ?

Mike Penders is regarded as the next big thing is Belgian football. Standing at 6 foot 7 inches he is known for his athleticism and tremendous shot stopping ability. We have seen this before, haven’t we? yes we have in one named Thibaut Coutoise who currently plays for Real Madrid. When you watch Penders play he reminds us about young Courtoise who infact came up through the youth ranks of Genk.

At 19 he has already been the captain of Jong Genk made 34 appearences for them. Captains the Belgium U19 team and already made two senior appearences for Genk. As it said here the package will be worth for 20 million euros which is almost 17 million pounds. This is including add onns. He will be staying with Genk for the 24/25 season to continue his development. Mike Penders will eventually join Chelsea in 2025. Yet another youngster to the already crowded the Blues ranks. The young goalkeeper will be the 11th Chelsea signing this summer.

QUESTIONS ASKED?

Chelsea have been spending again this window with 10 signings already done and the next would most likely be Mike Penders.

How are they getting the money to all this? Where is the FFP and PSR rules? So answer that we have to go through the outgoings Chelsea had this summer. A lot of young talents from academy and home grown talents bought in, have been sold for huge profits. For example the sale of Callum Hudson Odoi and Mason Mount last summer for a combined fee of 94 million pounds. Again this summer home grown talents like Omari Hutchinson, Lewis Hall and Connor Gallagher were sold for a combined fee of 124 million pounds. In addition to this academy graduate Ian Matsen was sold for 37.5 million pounds. So look at these sales, the profit they have made from these sales helped them sign more players this summer. Without any intervention from the PSR rules.

Going back to the earlier question. Why so much depth for one position? So we quiet don’t know what Blue Co group is planning for the club. They have signed a lot of young players and some positions are overflowing with talents. For example the goalkeeping department. Mike Pender is the ninth goalkeeper in their squad. A goalkeeper rarely gets chances to play and to have seven of them compete for one spot. It just feels illogical. So the answer for that maybe they are aiming at making profits in future.
