Although it may seem that Unai Emery is a serial winner, he never really had the chance to take charge of Spain‘s top teams. He views this as a next step.
“Nevertheless, he added, it is extremely challenging for any manager to win the top position at Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, or Barcelona”.Additionally, while at Villarreal last season, he led the Yellow Submarines to the UEFA Champions League final four. He also led Arsenal all the way to the semifinals of the European competition.
Unai Emery shares his ambitions
“[Leaving for the Premier League] is natural,” said the Europa League specialist.“We all have to look for competitive challenges. I have been fortunate to be in three clubs in Spain behind the highest level: Valencia, Sevilla, and Villarreal.
“From that gratitude, then the next step in Spain would be to train Atletico, [Real] Madrid, and Barça. But breaking that barrier is very difficult.
“The Premier gives me the opportunity to continue growing. Of course, Seville, Villarreal or Valencia also give it to me, but here I find new difficulties. And, let’s not forget, the Premier is home to the best teams of investors, coaches and players in the world,” he added.
To put it mildly, Emery’s time at Aston Villa has been nothing short of a revelation. Villa has scored in each of its 20 league games under his leadership since joining the Premier League in October of last year. They ranked 17th back then. Now they are currently ranked fifth.
While Emery might see managing a top La Liga club like Barcelona as his next step, he will likely have to wait for a while for the opportunity. After taking over, Xavi Hernandez did a good job. And as a result, he will get his contract extension. And this will be until 2026.
