United Plot Surprise Swoop for Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah

The Red Devils are ready to pounce as Barcelona stumbles in race to sign Jonathan Tah.

Jonathan Tah to Barca or Man Utd ?

Manchester United are reportedly attempting to hijack Barcelona’s likely first summer signing. The Spanish side are keen on German centre-back Jonathan Tah.

After a poor 2024–25 campaign, Utd are preparing for a big rebuild. Additionally, Bayer Leverkusen’s defensive star is now on their radar.

The Germany international’s contract expires in June, is available on a free. That makes him a great option for a club that must be smart in the market. Barca were linked with the 29-year-old in the past. But financial delays and internal chaos have stalled the deal.

That has opened the doors for United to strike. As Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are interested too, the race for the Bundesliga champ is heating up even more.

He was a big part of Leverkusen’s unbeaten league-winning season last term. He has 30 appearances out of a possible 31 this season so far. The defender has proved he can perform at the top level He has experience and leadership to be added to the PL side’s back line.

Sky Sports reports that Ruben Amorim sees the Leverkusen centre-back as a good option. Especially as Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are likely leaving this summer. They are also reportedly willing to double the German’s current weekly wages of £46,000 to secure the deal.

Will Signing the German defender be smart move ?

Signing Tah on a free sounds like a great deal. But, there are doubts on if the Red Devils need another centre-back. The club already brought Ayden Heaven in January. And they are impressed by Noussair Mazraoui’s talent in Amorim’s preferred back three system.

On top of that, Utd still need to fill other key gaps in the squad. A creative number 10, a top-class striker, and a solid defensive midfielder.

Despite that, it may feel Tah’s availability and experience are too good to let go. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s move is falling with financial terms are an issue for them. The Red Devils have a chance to land a top-tier defender for nothing.

The coming weeks will tell whether the Old Trafford club pushes forward or turn their attention elsewhere.
