According to a report by Mirror, Villarreal president Fernando Roig has given green light for selling Pau Torres this summer. It is believed that Manchester United is interested in the centre-back and willing to sign him for their next season.
Torres started his career with the Villarreal youth team and slowly found his way up to the first team with his impressive performance. Till now he has appeared 87 times while scoring 5 goals and 4 assists in all competitions for the yellow submarine.
However, he was sent for a loan to Malaga for one season where he appeared 40 times. But since returning from a loan he has been the mainstay at the backline for Villareal following his brilliant performances.
This season he has played 44 times while scoring 3 goals and 2 assists in all competitions. The defender played an important role in securing his team a Europa League spot for next season. While he led his team to their first European trophy by winning the Europa League this season.
The Spaniard was also included in the team of the season while mentioning his name in Europe’s top defenders. But, despite his impressive performance, the club will sell him because of the financial burden due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Torres has his contract until 2024 with a release clause of more than €60 million. The club president has strictly stated that they will not listen to any offer less than €50 million. It is believed that many big clubs are in line for the youngster but Manchester United are leading the race.
Manchester United interested upon pairing up Torres with Harry Maguire
Manchester United went to finish their season trophyless this year. The Red Devils sit second in the Premier League table securing a champions league spot for next season. While they also had a chance to win a trophy this season, but they went loose against Villarreal in the Europa League final.
It no secret that the United squad needs reinforcements this summer. The club has struggled to keep a clean sheet in skipper Harry Maguire’s absence and remain keen on a new center-back.
United’s manager has found their new center-back as they have shortlisted Pau Torres to pair up with Maguire. The red devils were pursuing Raphael Varane as their new center back earlier. But after the last audition for Torres in the Europa final, they are keen to sign the Spaniard.
But United has to hurry a bit as they might face tough competition from the Spanish giants Real Madrid. Los Blancos are also interested in Torres and sees him as a replacement for Varane in the team.
