Virgil van Dijk extends his stay at Anfield

Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool FC.

Van Dijk To Stay Until 2027

Liverpool fans can now breathe a sigh of relief after club captain Virgil van Dijk agreed a new deal. That extends his stay with the club until 2027.

The current season is coming to an end and the Netherlands international was set to be a free agent. He chose to follow Mohamed Salah in committing to the future of the Reds.

Van Dijk, 33, arrived at Anfield from Southampton in a then-record £75 million deal in 2018.

The defender in total has made 314 appearances for the Merseyside team. He also has a cabinet full of silverware including the Premier League, Champions League, and two EFL Cups.

Former skipper Jordan Henderson left in 2023. The Dutch defender has been captain of the club since. And he remains a key figure within the squad. Arne Slot is still trying to get his side’s 20th league title.

Although Virgil previously had stated that he wasn’t too sure if he would be staying. The defender recently stated the managerial plans regarding making a decision. These plans have come to a positive conclusion.

Questions Remain for Trent and Konate

Locking down Van Dijk, alongside Salah, is a great sign of intent. But it is also a smart move financially. Replacing both of their stars could have cost Liverpool around £200 million in fees alone.

Despite being in their 30s, neither has shown signs of slowing down. That has made their extensions both logical and strategi. The Reds can hold off on urgently signing a new centre-back this summer.

The club needs to negotiate contracts with Ibrahima Konate, who is in the last year of his contract. If Slot’s side cannot come to a deal with him, they may have to consider the possibility of selling him. Although, he can walk out of the door as a free agent in 2026.

In the meantime, the Premier League leaders has been looking at options. That includes Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, and Marc Guehi from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues around Trent Alexander-Arnold. In addition, his deal expires in July and has serious interest from Real Madrid.
