Not Tosin/Chalobah: Chelsea defender back in training after being sidelined by injury

Chelsea Wesley Fofana

Chelsea have picked up a much-needed boost as Wesley Fofana has returned to first-team training, drawing a line under his recent concussion absence and edging closer to selection.

There was no “race to return” narrative around the back line; rather, from a group of injured defenders, it’s simply encouraging that Fofana is the first one back on the grass.

The timing matters. Chelsea’s season has been punctured by injuries, and the defence has taken the brunt of it. Levi Colwill has faced a long-term knee issue, while Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah have also been sidelined, trimming Enzo Maresca’s options and forcing constant reshuffles across the back four.

Even short-term knocks elsewhere have magnified the strain on the unit that sets the platform for everything Chelsea wants to do in and out of possession.

Injury-hit back line: why Fofana’s return matters

From a footballing perspective, Fofana is a smart first return. His pace over the ground, recovery defending in big spaces, and comfort stepping into midfield suit Maresca’s structure—especially when Chelsea look to hold a higher line and compress the pitch.

With Fofana available, Maresca can re-balance partnerships (for example, pairing him with a more dominant aerial defender) and re-establish clearer roles for the full-backs and the No. 6 in rest-defence.

That alone should cut down the volume of emergency defending and give Chelsea a cleaner first pass into midfield.

Crucially, Chelsea can manage while they wait for the others. The squad still has enough coverage to rotate sensibly around Fofana’s minutes, protect match fitness, and avoid rushing anyone back.

In that context, having Fofana as the first defensive reinforcement is ideal: he raises the floor immediately without forcing the club to gamble on half-ready returns elsewhere.

The broader point remains unchanged—when Chelsea keep their defenders fit, the whole team looks different.

Not Tosin/Chalobah: Chelsea defender back in training after being sidelined by injuryBuild-up play is tidier, counter-presses bite sooner, and the attack sees more repeat entries into the final third because transitions are controlled at source.

Getting key pieces back, one by one, is the quickest route to stability and momentum.

So while supporters will rightly look forward to updates on Adarabioyo and Chalobah, the headline today is straightforward: Fofana is back with the group, and he’s a very good one to have back first.
